Maybe she spent too much of her work hours on her 'good looks'? Maybe her precious nails weren't suitable for typing? Maybe her hair presentation was unsuitable for the work environment? etc.

It sounds like a Big Bang Theory storyline, as if someone that looked like Penny was working in that industry, and the stereotypical geeks fawn over her and the stereotypical less attractive science geeks get really jealous.

The pay doesn't sound that great for a Science PhD though.

Not working for 2 years doesn't sound right though. More of a work environment and personality thing than a work in general thing.

Whats the difference between this and all the blokes who cant work cause they hurt their knee 8 years ago but have no problem walking the dog

That's the thing... First of all, she isn't overly good looking. I get she was a scientist, but I'm sure the blokes have seen better looking than her.
Secondly, how vain and mentally fragile can you be for that to keep you out of work for 2 years? Even if people were asking you out commonly, how on Earth would that render you not wanting to go to work?

it would be equivalent to about 70k over here. The wages are much higher in Australia. 30k pounds is decent.

Anyway, that article is hilarious, thanks for posting. :thumbsu:

Oh that makes more sense. I just saw the dollar translation on an .au site, I assumed that was AU.

I have a few friends who have finished their PHD in physics and engineering and are still in research working at uom and they're earning what i quoted above. It's ok.

My brother is finishing his PHD in philosophy and another friend in engineering and they're earning nothing but essentially they're still students, so.....

Yeah, I've got a fair few family that have gone down the science doctorate route. You're not on the breadline or anything, but you don't do particularly well given how long you need to study for, how smart you are, and what you could earn relative to other occupations. Apparently there can be pretty limited opportunities for advancement, too.

The situation in the US can be a bit better, I think.

Yes it is.

Also I was talking to my brother about being an academic when he finishes his PHD and he was telling me how competitive it is especially given that you're competing against people who've done their PHD in the States and their PHD programs go for longer and prepare you to be an all rounder in your chosen discipline.

I was disappointed to learn that the academic positions here are essentially going to go to people schooled (as in uni) in the US.

Yeah, when I think back on when I was studying, almost every single one of my younger lecturers had studied in the US/UK.

By far the best actual teacher, though, was a recent philosophy PHD grad from ANU.

Yes that is one Uni in Australia that can compete.
