Been hearing that Tuck will play backline this year, i dont understand where he would fit in the backline and he should stay part of the midfield rotation and if he was going to change anywhere he should play forward if anything, is a decent mark, strong and a good kick at goal.

Sounds like king will be playing midfield but then for the backline allready McMahon,Newman, Bowden, Schulz,Polak. Thursfield, McGaune, Morton and Raines would make up the first choice backline players

I just dont see how tuck would fit there, he would be better off as a foward pocket

Morton, Thursfield, McGaune
J.Bowden, Schulz, McMahon
Newman, Coughlan, Tambling
Pettifer, Richo, Brown
Deledio, Polak, Tuck
Simmonds, King, Foley
Johnson, Pattison, Tivendale, Raines

Ive probably forgotten somone that should be more deserving in the team but to me its great to finaly get some depth and a bit of competition for spots in the team, to me i cant fit riewoltd, edwards, and a few others in

Richo was on 3AW tonight and confirmed that Tuck will be in defence this year. Also said Polak will play forward and Schulz will be CHB.

strange move, must have a few players queing up for the inside mids role that Tuck has had dibs on for a couple of seasons now....very interesting, although he does compete well a defensive area we were really shown up for in 2007. Perhaps not as silly as it sounds..a quick and agile defence with sarge being used as the battering ram..Polak up forward...think I like the sound of this

Doesn't really cut it with the elite onballers so will be interesting to see how he goes down there.

I am pretty sure he started off as a defender from West Adelaide so does have experience down back.

he has the height and has been playing injured which supposedly impacted on his kicking. we shall see if its a good move i guess.

Why would we play one of our best athletes (Deledio) and one of our best ball winners (Tuck) in the forward pockets?

Play them where their best assets count.

Three players will be spending more time down back this year because of our increase in depth.

Johnson - probably spend a fair bit of time on the back flank as he is getting old

Coughlan - because he is coming back from injury

Tuck - because of the younger guys coming into our midfield.

I think its great , Tuck will also be needed on the ball in tight games and in wet weather games, he'll still sneak up for a couple of goals.

All this will allow Polak to play forward and then play as a loose man in defence towards the end of quarters or when we are getting a shlacking.

Its exactly what we need to happen and should be over the moon about it.

Why would you take one of our only ball winners out of the midfield? We need the most skillful small guys in defence and Tuck isn't one of those. His value is in the middle

Doesn't make sense with what i've seen of him on the park. I'd have thought that if his role in the midfield was under threat they'd play him off the bench to give the #1 onballers a rest for 5 minutes a quarter.

I wouldn't want him to match up on a tall CHF. I think he'd get outmarked too easily. And I don't think he has that rebound that Bowden has. Perhaps play him on weedy kids to scare them out of the contest, that or just iron them out. But playing a guy in the backline just to hurt people leaves a lot of times where the opposition are gonna get free kicks or just run off him. Strange choice.

I think its a great move another experienced player who can win the ball and kicks well playing down back. As Geelong showed last year rebounding out of defence is critical to winning games. Tucky is a good long kick on the run I can see him winning the ball in a contest running a few steps and kicking it 50m to someone up field. Hes as tough as nails and a good mark.

Our list is getting depth and im loving it cant wait to see kingy in the guts too hes got real mongrel in him.

That makes sense. I thought Tuck was only playing defence in the prac matches because Thursfield and McGuane have been in the rehab group therefore we needed someone to match up on the forwards.

Tuck in defence will only work if players like Tambling/Polo/Jackson etc step up in the middle.

I think that's the expectation and why they have decided that now is the time to make the change. Even last year in a patched up, poorly performing side he was given roles outside of the midfield at times and I think the long term view of this current football dept has always been to maximise Tucks effectiveness and minimise his weaknesses away from the midfield when the opportunity finally arose.

Thats the way I see it as well.
We have recruited to bolster the midfield & re-bound half back flank line and with youngsters coming through, (Axel already there, Bling, Lids, Edwards, Connors, Jackson, Cotchin) the possible move of Newman & Raines & Kingy up the ground & the old guard of Johnson etc... still there, not to mention Coggs come-back, the midfield is looking stronger.
Someone saying that Tuck will play down back in 2008 does not mean he will play all 22 games there, but it may be a plan to start building a structure beyond this year.
Personally, I reckon Tuck could develop into a hard-nosed, hard checking backman. He is all elbows & knees and with long arms does "play tall" as well as being a bit feisty!

I really would like to see Tucky stay in the middle.

His extractor skills are fantastic, now that we have gotten some good kids together, he has somebody to give it to.

Totally agree. His foot skills are average at best. He did do some tagging jobs in the midfield last year, maybe he will do a similar job in defence? Not sure really. I don't see any value with him being played in defence, or even in attack for that matter.

I'd like to see Raines in the midfield. Not doing a tagging job, but going out there and attacking.
