Well someone brought him up in the other thread so I thought i'd start him off at #1 in the series(if I can stay motivated).
Of course the series is about not how great they were at the time, but more about what would they have done in the future.
Ian Curtis
15 July 1956 - 18 May 1980
Onto Mr Curtis.
Considering the timing of his death it is without doubt an almost certainty that there were at least 1-2 more Joy Division albums involving him and his distinctive vocal talents.
That time frame would have taken the band up to around 1985 when that style of music still had appeal.
Due to hindsight we now know what happened after his death(New Order), but had he survived would the group have restyled their sound and still had Curtis at vocals so that we had his vocals for Blue Monday or would that song never have surfaced due to the band remaining a more dark and basic sound.
Personally I think we would have ended up with Ian and the band lasting a quite a few more albums(and years) and progressing in sound to something more like Echo and the Bunnymen than New Order.
This is plausible as with bands like Echo and XTC we have exmaples of bands who came from similar times still enduring on for years after.
I don't see him as a solo artist, he liked to perform, but I think that as a group the band was a tight unit as evidenced by their pact that should any band member ever leave they would not6 use the name Joy Division again.
The fact the rest of the group has stuck together all these years suggests that it might have been either the group or nothing for Curtis.
Thoughts?
