Umpiring today

Ray Chamberlain = Prima donna who thinks 41,000 people showed up yesterday to watch him!!! He should stick to drinking Breezers with his mates down in Prahran. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!!) & Im sure the umpires looked up at the scoreboard at 3/4 time & thought "it's a bit one-sided, we'd better even up the frees in the last quarter so we gat a game next week!! Joke:thumbsd:

No offence, on yesterday's game, the crows are not a top 4 side (certainly will make the finals but aren't a legit flag threat) ...

Our lack of a decent ready ruckman, and the poor kicking at goal, and the crucial turnovers (which I think is probably more down to our young list and inexperience more then anything) and the fact Crows had some decent vets who know how to win games during clutch quarters, was the biggest contribution to our loss, however the umpiring really was the worst standard i've seen at a Carlton game for several years, and now I know why people hate Razor Chambermaid, he's a tosser ..

No we arent a real flag threat, agree. Still can make top 4 though. Positions 3 and 4 in the top 4 are wide open though. Us/Sydney/WB/North/Collingwood ae the 5 most likely and we sit comfortably amongst those teams

If I've said it once, I've said it three times, I did not blame the umpires for our loss, I just questioned some of the frees given against us, particularly around our forward 50. The shocker against Gibbs who legitimately spoiled the ball while running back was ridiculous, and the Waite decision even more so. It was like the umpire at that end of the ground was hormonal or something and was keen to ping us for whatever.

I agree that the free kick against Gibbs was not there but that, unfortunately, is the INTERPRETATION these days. You cannot run towards a player and contest for the mark - it is an automatic free kick, despite Gibbs extraordinary skill in the spoil he made.
But, lets not be selective! Run the tape and you will see an Adelaide guy spoiling Hartnett in exactly the same fashion in the first quarter with the (undeserved) free going to Hartnett. This was one of two shots he had, one of which at least he should have nailed.
Waite was simply undisciplined and needs a rocket from Ratten. It was his sloppy, lackadaisical attack on the ball that allowed the Adelaide guy to get the kick in the first place.
Jordan Russell should be fined his match fee for the appalling way he handled the set shot for goal from 35 metres. That was completely sub-standard from someone whose only occupation is to learn football skills and apply them.

Well said, Syd. You'd be pretty proud of your old number 5 running around out there on the back of our captain?

The umpiring was dodgy yesterday. It didn't cost us the game but it was still dodgy.

Green maggots hate us. Always have and probably always will. They should wear pink :)

You don't really believe that, do you?

Umpiring was shambolic, though Chamberlein's decisiona gainst Wait was the corret one I think as the umpire had not signaled the goal and therefore any infringement is in the goal square and not back in the centre. Harsh penalty certainly but technically the right decision...i think.

Its funny though how every team's supporters hate the umpires and R Chamberlien in particular. Someone must be getting the benefit of all these bad decisions, probably bloody Collingwood!;)

2 weeks in a row Adelaide have had the momentum pushed back in their favour through crap umpiring. Fremantle were very unlucky to not win on the road last week, they were out-classing Adelaide all over the ground in the third and final quarters.

It's beyond a joke now, the umpiring is getting worse every season. How astonishing was the goal umpiring decision in the Anzac Day clash where Lloyd hit the post in the first term? The goal umpire must have been smoking crack to miss that.

I'm not making excuses for Gibbs' shoddy kick out early in the third term, but he was CLEARLY dragged out of bounds when he was attempting to patch up his mistake. That shit decision resulted in a goal to Adelaide, when a throw in and subsequent ruck contest may have resulted in the ball heading towards the other end of the ground. It's stupid for me to be playing the 'IF' game, but if the boundary umpire had have called the play as he should have, there may have been a different outcome to that passage of play. So it's not just field umpires and goal umpires who need their contact lenses checked, it's also the boundary umpires.

If they use impartial umpires in cricket, why not use them in the AFL?

If the players were sitting around thinking as the majority of posters in this thread are I would be happy to cut up my membership. To blame the umpires because we weren't good enough is ridiculous.
Do those complaining about Saturdays umpiring attribute our win against Collingwood to the umpires? We got a great run that day and all the Collingwood fans who complained about it were whingers but i didnt hear any Carlton supporters thanking the umpired for getting us across the line.

Now, that is an absolute classic!
Where do you propose we get them? South Africa? West Indies? England?
And who is going to decide who is "impartial" and who is not?
And if Chamberlain (and others presumably) have been "partial" to the Crows this week, who will they be partial to if the Crows aren't playing?
And what are we to do when both sides claim to have been hard done by the same set of umpires?.

You are a moron. Why don't you just thank your lucky stars that we have people willing to ignore the crap you and your ilk dish out, and be umpires. It's morons like you who turn people off footy.

You meant from neutral states, right? Although I'm told all 3 were from Victoria on Saturday.

I think he meant umpires with ions that are equal in positive and negative charge which would render then neutral.

Appreciate you not bringing litmus paper into it. :thumbsu:

WTF? I might be a bloody moron, but where did I imply in my post that I dish out shit to umpires? My point was that the quality of umpiring is getting worse and this is no doubt due to the fact that the speed of the game has increased. If the players are under scrutiny for making shit decisions and skill errors, and consequently get dropped to the Magoos, why the hell don't the umpires get dropped until they can prove themselves at a lower level? Peer review isn't just put in place to inflate egos.

As for impartial umpires, you don't necessarily have to introduce umpires from a different country/state. Why not take a competent, fit professional from a different sport, and teach them the code? If players like Tadgh Kennelly, Martin Clarke and the o'hAilpin brothers can pick up the game as quickly as they have, I can't see any problem in educating some impartial umpires. With a heap of accredited umpires, and a decent rotations policy in place, it might put comments like "that ump is a biased prick" to bed.

Just an idea for the betterment of the game mate, isn't that what discussion forums are for? ;) :p

Sorry Pyro, but what would make them any more impartial than the current crop?

Still not transparent - you make a good point, there is a chance of cross pollination. Say a soccer line judge from NSW took the plunge and crossed from soccer to running the boundary in the AFL, there's a strong chance he'd favour Sydney.

Given that AFL has been exposed to different countries, once the game has developed in these regions, it might not be a bad idea to introduce umpires from other countries. Something I feel isn't as far away as it seems.

Then again, consistent peer review and game simulation at AFL speed might help iron out the relatively simple errors such as a player carrying the ball over the boundary line, or a ball skimming the goal post.

Psychological profiling could eliminate any possibility of favouritism. There are many factors that can contribute to favouritism, even something as hilariously simple as the colour of a team's guernsey.

Meh... I'm just spewing ideas really... but something needs to be done. I dunno about you but I haven't watched a game this season without scratching my head wondering what made an umpire make wrong call.

Grant Thomas on SEN seems to think it's out of control. The problem is there is no solution. Because the game has shot to un-umpirable levels of contact, speed and skill, we have the ____ing moronic attempts to reel it back in by Bartlett and his merry band of ________s. Hands in the back and a future cap on interchanges are reactive and futile attempts to reign in the bolting horse. What to do. FIIK.

If we discount every human who likes the colour red from being footy umpires we are reducing the pool even more to people who could potentially do the job aren't we?
Do you seriously think that umpires favour a team because of their city of birth or because of who they barracked for as a kid?

Are umpires all fulltime employees of the AFL? I know that they all used to have first jobs and umpiring was their second job but I am not sure if this is still the case. If it isnt then this needs to become a priority.
