Don't get too excited just yet. Although Uruguay is the best team to be playing, they still have many superstars, and have also played a lot more together.

However, the away leg will be at sea level, Uruguay haven't qualified in 20 years, and we have a damn good team.

Prepare for an absolute blitz of soccer publicity in the 10 days....the hype and excitement will be unbelievable.

COME ON AUSSIES!

This is great news, we have a great chance of qualifying now, and on their day, I think Australia could challenge any team in the world cup, providing the other team didn't have a great game.

Our ranking is now 48 in the world, which isn't great, but is up 3 in the past 2 months, and up 24 over the past year.

However, Uruguay are ranked 23rd in the world, which is a slight fall from their 21 ranking 2 months ago. Still a bit of a tough challenge, but better than playing Brazil(2) or Colombia(8)

Three requests:

1) Please let's not say "could we really be going to the World Cup?" because anyone who has followed Australian soccer would know that we have a fantastic ability to shoot ourselves in the foot.

2) Can we call them Uruguay please?

3) Can we not call ourselves "Socceroos"? We're Australia, thanks very much.

You know I have never been interested in soccer, but the past few days, with the 'friendly' between France and Australia, I have become very interested indeed.

Go Aussies! :)
