19 players under 100 games vs 9 over 150, that's a lot of experience we were down.

We have to start learning from getting belted around by these top teams, they aren't going to let their guard down against us anymore, as may have happened in previous years when we have knocked off top 4 teams.

Not good enough. Tonight proves our fringe players are not good enough to compete for a flag this season.

Hawthorn were bigger, strong and worked harder all game. Our mid's couldn't handle the pressure around the ball, while our defensive pressure was not comparable to Hawthorn. It made it difficult for our forwards and put to much pressure on the mids.

I like how Jetta showed some intensity in that area when subbed on.

I wasn't impressed with Kommer's attitude...it is good to be hard and tough but not when we are getting flogged. Focus on causing a turnover, or setting up a scoring opportunity.

Zaharakis needs to be called out for his lack of effort defensively. For someone who has his quickness and speed he doesn't work hard enough...still a one way player. There were multiple times I noticed Zaka standing next to Mitchell and Mitchell got to the next contest while Zaka was still standing in the same area wondering around.

Pears showed more improvement considering the midfield didn't make it easy for any of our defenders.

Baugley showed me he should be considered our most improved player on the season right behind Carlisle.

Daniher needs to spend the rest of the year in the 2s and in the weight room, for now we need to keep Belly and Ryder in the same team. I can still see Belly get moved at the end of the season along with a few others while throwing some money at another big free agent. Dustin Martin has put contract talks on hold with Richmond, just a name to throw around.

Umpiring had no impact on the game but the decisions that made no sense were Hodge clearly tripping Ryder. One of Hawthorns early goals was clearly touched, shown by the replay. There is no reason why the replay shouldn't have been called. Also I think Jetta laid a tackle on Lake, who tried to rush the behind but it went out of bounds. My understanding of the rule is if you try to put the ball out of play and it goes out of bounds then it is deliberate.

Hawthorn are a chance at the flag, Essendon are a notch below that standard. Sydney, Geelong and hawthorn have beaten us comfortable. It is all about closing that gap over the off-season.

For Collingwood I would only bring in Crameri and Davey for Kommer (attitude adjustment) and Daniher. If Melksham gets suspended, Kommer stays in. I would give Zaharakis the vest to send a message.

We got beaten by a team that just don't give the ball up.
Their kicking is close to perfect, hardly missed a target all night.
When the game was hot (1st 8 mins or so) we more than matched them because they couldn't play keepings off.
When it slowed and we couldn't pressure as much, they just didn't give it up.

We need to learn from this. The short 20m kick to get the ball out and free. They did it time after time. Could someone tell me how many times Mitchell kicked it, how far he kicked it, and how many times a Hawthorn player marked it. Watch the tape of that and learn to do it and we'll be a much better team.

Geelong and the Swans can beat Hawthorn because they don't concede that 20m kick as easily.

I'd love to see some stats on how far they kicked it on average. If you leave out shots for goal and pressure kicks ie just look at kicks in the field of play where the player had enough time to make a choice, their average length kick would have been about 25m.

Just shit.

Positives:
Heppell and Melksham gave strong efforts.
Colyer was decent again.
Hurley was a real presence...

Negatives:
...but way too late, and needs to take marks and kick goals.
None of the midfield leaders really stood up
Decision to play Daniher, while exciting, was stupid
Decision making was absolutely woeful.

Winderlich, Watson, Fletch were all sorely missed.

Pre-game I was pretty sure we would be able to at least break even in the middle, and that it was our defence that we would have to worry about, oh well at least I was half right.
Hawks just worked much harder all game, seemed that they always got to the drop of the ball first.
BJ stanton and co all played reasonable games but obviously no one really stood up, which is worrying.

Zaka was dissapointing.

Hocking tried his guts out and had some good passages but obviously needs to build up some match fitness.

Hurley went hard as ever down forward and produced I reasonable effort I guess but f*ck he needs to learn to take a mark of go down back its just that simple. I know its not a easy job but

Carsile produced a absolutly shi!ful effort tonight, barely even seemed to be playing on buddy for half the match. Dempsey didnt really do much. Del had some good touched and tackels but struggled.

Colyer went missing a lot but was generally good when it got near him.

We just aren't at the big boys level yet. Hawks, Geelong and Sydney all taught us a lesson.

We will get there, but for the time being just enjoy the improvement.

Just my 2 cents.
You're only as good as your bottom 6. I know the numbers might have been a bit exaggerated tonight given they were on top basically the whole game but if you compare Savage, Puopolo, Guerra, Hill, Simpkin and Bruest with the likes of Colyer, Kommer, Dell'Olio and Baguley.

These guys performing makes life so much easier for the stars. It's really been a key to our success over the last few years.

Del shit, not strong or fast enough.
Kommer shit, can't find space.
Howlett crap, Hocking crap - needed a run?
Zaha pathetic, selfish and lazy.
Daniher, wrong time to play him.

Our backs were hung out to dry, no midfield or forward pressure.
No leadership on the ground.

Hurley tries but if you keep dropping it and falling over you just give them free turnovers.

Need Winderlich, Crameri, Watson, Flether. Need to settle the forward line.

Very disappointing Heppell needs some mates. Melksham keeps up his form.

Hopefully we get a few back for next week.

Hopefully Jetta holds his place.

Guerra and Breust are nowhere near Hawthorn's bottom 6 IMO.

Hawthorn are bigger cheats than Collingwood. Illegal blocks, pushing, late tackles... Helps them A LOT when it's not penalised adequately.

Having said that, our coaches are very poor against Hawthorn generally.

Although I'm probably overreacting, that was effing deplorable. How we expect to do anything with our season when we've consistently played averagely against top four opposition (Geelong, Sydney and tonight), I've got no idea. We've improved, but it's disheartening to see how the best teams still make us look like a bunch of auskickers.
Lots of players just looking lax and as if they couldn't care less what was happening. I thought Jetta showed a fair bit of heart and drive, but he was about the only one. We need to seriously look at team strategy and decision making, as right now, we're going nowhere in a hurry (sure we'll make it to finals, but we want more than just the first or second week).

May have been a stretch with them but Guerra picked up 27 touches with 9 marks. If you look through the 22 that played you there wouldn't be too many below him.

Anyway, didn't want to try and stir anything up on your board. Just how I viewed the match tonight. :thumbsu:

Yep, and add Crams to that as well. I know he hasn't been playing that well recently, but I think he would have offered more than young Joe at this stage.

But no excuses, Hawks are the best team. That's where we need to be if we're going to win it. The most important thing is that we learn from this game and get better. We're still a good side and have a chance to finish top 4.

Definitely some questionable coaching and selection decisions.
Really have no idea why the left Daniher out for the last 3 games only to bring him in now, not really sure what they were expecting to happen.

Goddard & Dempsey have been getting worse over the last 4 games. Even Pig can't mark it anywhere near as often as he was 12 weeks ago

Stants hasn't been damaging at all, alot of disposals that put pressure straight on the receiver. Hepps has been the only one to stand up and go in hard in the middle. Howlett.... hello???

frustrating month. I just hope we can win a final. that's the important thing for this group.

Oh, no of course. I hope you didn't view my post as hostile!
