In the FB comments of Angus Abbey's passing, Ivan's sister in law posted that 1960s Bulldog ruckman Ivan Marsh passed away on the weekend at the age of 82.

Short for a ruckman atc185cm, Ivan was a solid bugger. An old neighbour of mine worked with him as butchers.

For anyone like me who collected/collects Scanlens footy cards, you'll probably know Ivan was the victim of 2 stuff ups by Scanlens.

In 1969, the 4 Footscray players had their names reversed, so the Thorpe card is actually Marsh and vice versa, and likewise Cook and McGowan carry the wrong names:

Then in 1972, in what is one of my favourite cards in my collection, poor old Ivan had his photo slightly recropped, readjusted for colour, and labelled as Ron McGowan!

I remember Ivan Marsh well. Played ruck at 185cm would not be a tall midfielder these days. When he finished at the dogs he played many games with Coburg who I followed in VFA. Those days all VFL were played on Saturday and VFA on Sunday. Can you believe some players had a smoke at 3/4 quarter time, those days you could listen to the address on the ground. I think Ivan did. I can remember Bob Johnson did for sure he captained coached Prahan after finishing with the dees. No high-performance coaches here.

I wasn’t even alive in the ‘60’s but I reckon that’s peak Footscray guernsey/uniform. Button up woolen jumpers, higher hoops, true colours and black or white shorts. Also no clutter with sponsors.
I like how we are remembering our past players. Our club has a wonderful history, much more than our 100 years in the VFL/AFL.
