Vale Harry Smith

Harry was in charge of D Company at the renowned battle of Ling Tan

article

Major Harry Smith at the time, was in charge of D Company on that fateful day August 18, 1966 that saw 18 diggers make the ultimate sacrifice in which 108 men held off a battalion of North Vietnamese and VC soldiers

Harry Smith can be seen here giving quite the narrative on how the battle panned out.

I read a book about Long Tan by Terry Burstall (I think?), one of the diggers there.

Diggers were professional (few things further up the chain not so well done), disciplined, and lucky. A close run thing vs enormous odds.

7 Diggers killed in pretty much the first minute of the battle.
