Thankfully, the wife and myself don't believe in Valentines Day - pretty much because of the reasoning set out by Mr Burner here.

In fact - never brought flowers for her at any stage of the relationship (i believe flowers aren't a lasting gift as they die (and they don't appreciate fake flowers) - rather give spontanous gifts of jewellery, dinner at nice restaurants or dvds of chick shows.

Any people out there have any good ideas for some MATERIAL valentine gifts?

Isn't Valentines day an American celebration? Why aren't you guys yelling about "American cultural imperialism!"?

Since I do buy her flowers ad hoc and aren't stingy on birthday and xmas gifts she is fine with it. Sometimes you have bring people around.

What's the difference between Valentines Day and Christmas?

But don't people buy presents for Christmas only because it's the cultural thing to do?
Yep, but you're missing the point.

Do you think buying a valentine's gift for your partner is romantic? Or do you think, "wait a second, it's hardly romantic if the idea isn't completely my own"?

I agree. The reasoning behind it is flawed.
But no more so than Christmas is. Just seems weird that you boycott one and not the other.

Personally, I'm too scared of the consequences if I miss either ;).

It's the same as mothers & fathers day, there is nothing wrong with setting aside one day to celebrate special days.

People can either celebrate, or ignore them as they see fit.

I'm not really a fan of Xmas either - i think xmas is for kids to have a good time and get presents, and catch up with family.

But the problem with valentines day is it's meant to be romantic but isn't. I think flowers on a couple of other days of the year send a much stronger message.

Females appreciate foreplay.

Not just the lube things up so I can make my way in kind, but genuine foreplay.

One option is .... hint .... starts with cun and ends in s and has no tea.

A trip to the butcher's shop & then............

I used to buy my ex husband flowers for Valentines Day and just as a spontaneous jesture to let him know that I was thinking of him.

Really, you shouldnt just have one day of the year when you buy your partner something to say I LOVE YOU!!! It should be anytime of the year.

And tell the one that you love that you LOVE THEM everyday. Life is too short not to show your emotions to the one you love.

I wouldnt say that to KissStephanie, she'd knock u cold and place a hospital Id tag on your big toe!

I agree with Bunsen. I used to buy my girls valentines day present but havent for about 5 years. 1 great thing about Japan is that girls are expected to buy presents for guys on V-day.

Don't all girls here buy their guys presents & cards too? Everyone I know, the couples give each other presents on V day & go out somewhere for dinner.
