Hey guys, I’m in year 12 and we have to do an oral presentation on an issue in the media and I am doing; 'that Terry Wallace has been treated unfairly both by the media and in general'

I was hoping people could post evidence, examples and opinions on this because obviously you guys know a lot about it.
Try to keep the anti-Wallace bagging out of it, e.g. "he's crap, he deserves it and he should be sacked, etc.

I'm mainly looking for reasoning why/how Wallace has been treated unfairly and why he should not be sacked immediately as a lot of supporters are wanting.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

You may have read this article by Mick Malthouse, but if not it has some great points in it that you may like to consider:

Wallace feeding frenzy a disgrace

Perhaps draw some parallels with Wallace and Richmond with Thompson and your team Geelong. of course that in itself is highly debatable but it can relate to the argument about allowing a coach time to carry our his plan. Also search through all the "sack wallace" threads, there are still a number of pro-wallace supporters on here that form intelligent arguments of why Wallace should either see out the year or get an extension. The media and their handling of coaches careers is almost a separate issue.

Good luck with it.

certainly been treated unfairly as example through the herald sun and exploited by the media in general. good example is the death row article that crossed the line and was far too strong.

keep the examples up guys help him out

he hasnt been treated unfairly at all! imo he deserves every bit of media scrutiny he gets. lifes unfair terry, get over it! also why is a geelong supporter doing a oral on a richmond issue...shouldnt you be doing, why did geelong choke in the grand final!?

It's mostly the sensationalism that has been unfair, as ohhhBigMalcho (lolwhut?) pointed out. He did deserve to be under a fair bit of scrutiny for how we performed in the first four weeks of his 5th year (when we were supposed to be a possible top four team), but the football media just goes way over the top. This past month it's been Wallace but they'll be doing it to someone else soon enough (unless we go straight back to that kind of form again).

You probably won't get a whole paragraph out of it but I find it interesting how often media people and talkback callers (and yes, some posters on this forum) go with the, "he's had 5 years" argument. No he hasn't. He's had 4 years and 5 games. But if it helps their position on the issue hey, just make it up!
Another way people attack him is personally (Terry Tan, Terry Wallet etc) and also regarding things about which they may well know little if anything. Things like, "get Hardwick, he wouldn't take any crap" as though Wallace doesn't have a crack at his players when they don't follow team rules or play poorly. Pure speculation.
Then there's the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" part of being the coach. You can't win with the people who don't like you. Do 'Tuesdays with Terry' and you're a spin doctor who should pull his head in and worry about the following week's game. Don't talk to the media and they'll carve you up for being petulant and someone who should know better for being in the media.
One more - from the way some people talk about him, you'd think he was the first bloke to leave a workplace to work elsewhere. Some Bulldogs fans bang on as though they were married to him and he had an affair on the side.
Anyway, hope the assignment goes well and where do I send the cheque for the therapy session?

Don't forget to exam the fact that this person in the public eye has seemingly failed in his CURRENT CONTRACT unless Richmond succeeds in the last year of Terry's Contract.

Criticism from the media, and level of support of the media's opinion, and on the flip-side, the unique fever-like support for failure because it represents your club, can't be seen as 'unfair treatment' to someone in the public eye.
This is the parcel of pressure they are highly paid for when they sign on for the contract.

And ask yourself what part supporters play in the reaction to the media's scrutiny of Coaches in the AFL.
Only those in the media who act like supporters blindly hang onto THESE EXCUSES for failure.

When a movie fails at the box office and a famous star is part of it, the Movie and the Star ARE fairly treated AND dully criticized in the media. The general public, who have no current allegiance, may also criticize the Movie and the Star.

When a song fails in the charts and a famous singer is part of it, the Song and the Singer ARE fairly treated AND dully criticized in the media. The general public, who have no current allegiance, may also criticize the Singer and the song.

The same treatment, or criticism, or 'unfair treatment' as you call it, happens in the media EVERYDAY in....

The entire public world is under constant review.
You cannot call the reviewing or criticism of a person or thing, 'unfair treatment' because a small, currently unenlightened section of the public or media, cannot honestly review the current situation or person.

If you wanted to give an interesting speech at school, then pose these questions to your audience.
Why in Australia today, when we disagree with an opinion or thought, do we shoot the messenger?
Is the argument, theory or opinion so uncrackable or understandable, that we need to discredit the person putting forward the opinion?

You see it here on BF all the time.
Caroline Wilson says something we don't want to hear or agree with, so we say...'Oh, she is a bag!'.
Grant Thomas says something,...'Oh, he's a fool'
Damien Barrett says something....'Oh, I hate him"
Tony Shaw says something...'Can't stand him'
Etc, etc.
I do it sometimes too. It's a fault. And it's a huge fault in this country.

You will never have an impartial fact presented through the media without someone with a distorted belief attacking the messenger and not the fact.

The Stats on Wallace's coaching career at Richmond is A FACT.
Then look at every opinion surrounding TW at the RFC.
Has the FACT been 'unfairly treated'? Hmm...
If not....then the Media is innocent of everything but reacting, publicizing and making everyone aware of the FACTS.

Cheers

I think the fact that a professional coach in any sport can't get a team of any sort of ability to do the basics (eg: play a contact sport with any sort of aggression or passion) for 4 games in succession or in our case just one quarter (3rd against the Cats) deserves to be bagged , judged and have pressure put on him to do his job properly as what it states in his contract.

Alot of people have defended Terry for alot of years because he simply did not have the cattle. This year is different so in my opinion Terry deserved what he got and deserves what he gets in the future.

If Richmond put in one more quarter as we saw against Carlton or the Bulldogs I will be all over him again like a fat kid on a smarty and I hope the media give it to him again as well.

I don't believe he was hard done by at all. There is a 80% chance we will not play finals this year because of those insipid 3 games especially and I hold him responsible.

If we lose again this week then we are right back where we started and it is going to be a very tough game against a very well drilled team with a coach that has alot more ability and respect off his players and the general public than Terry.

Go Tigers

i have really thought about a lot of the shit that goes on at our club this week and this is where i am at ...

The personal attacks on the bloke as if he was 1 part Idi amin .... one part Saddam Hussain and one part Pol Pot ...

just the personal stuff goes way over the top and is pretty baseless ...

A couple of journos out there need to have a real good look at themselves .

I have no doubt that TW is dong everything he possibly can to get our side where we want it too ... making out that he is akin to Martyn Bryant and attacking the very fibre of the man to the core is really weak ....

Makes a lot of poeple feel better about themselves to tear strips off a bloke who is ...lets face it ... 99.5% more successful in life than than any of us , but hey ... thats the Aussie way :thumbsu:

So in other words, if someone is not successful, humiliate and degrade them?
This is the post of a person who has been brainwashed by the media, sucked into believing what they write.
You can get your point across in life without humiliating a person.
Why the media do it to high profile figures like Terry Wallace is an interesting debate.
There may be something in the fact that busy people with access to multiple media touch points mean that hysterical headlines and insulting comments (read Grant Thomas) tend to "cut through" the competitive clutter.
