I've been watching us recently and have noticed more and more in recent weeks that our midfielders aren't great defensively. Cotchin, Deledio and Martin are our most damaging players, but neither of them have a huge defensive side to their game. Even the recently drafted Conca doesn't look like having a big tackling game, although being young we can give him the benefit of the doubt. Cotchin gets involved around the ball and often smothers, but his tackling game isn't great. Jackson, Tuck and even Nahas are noted tacklers, but they aren't great with the ball.

I know that many have said our needs come draft time are a key defender and a ruck, and I agree, but I think another big need is a midfielder with a strong defensive game. Obviously being able to kick is a non negotiable, but perhaps come draft time when picking midfielders we should closely examine the defensive side of their games.

Being a tackling/defensive midfielder doesn't mean having a poor offensive game, think of good examples being guys like: Judd, J Kelly, Hayes, Ling,, Kirk, K Cornes.

Thoughts?

We need our whole side to be able to tackle better. The amount of tackles that slipped yesterday was criminal. Absolutely criminal.

Mindset is one way to improve that, so to is body size. How long do we have to keep saying we have the smallest players in the land before that imposter of a fitness guy leaves our club. He has lasted three coaches now and a decade of nothing. It is beyond a joke.

Agree that everyone needs to be averaging 4 tackles a game minimum. Guys like Jackson should be wracking up 10 a game because his ball use is horrible.

Accountability form the base which leads to credability, and the Tiges have neither at the moment. Melbourne handed the bruise free football instruction manual to 'em and they swallowed it 100%. I Nick Daffy the midfield coach?
Do ourselves a favour and go HARD after Mark Neeld at the end of the year. Hand him the midfielders and he'll sort them out. Target the youngsters (obviously we are gonna get a top 10 pick if the weekend is any indication) and rewrite the rule book.

Elite midfield groups have golden rules, and if you deviate from the golden rules, your out! Accountability is chapter 1........

while i agree we need that defensive midfielder, i think tackling is more a mindset thing, ok for some players it comes naturally, but alot of the time its about them actually wanting to tackle and apply pressure.

Have you not seen the lovely work of Hislop and Hellbig.

Our next mid needs to be a junkyard dog, not only is he comfortable getting his 30 possies and winning the clearances he needs to get his 7+ tackles ea week...super important...and Jacko, the time clock is ticking matey

Jackson fills the criteria above...

But i do agree we need another big body clearance machine. The fact is we use to have Tuck who for his disposal limitations was a hard ball and tackling machine who we replaced with Grigg who is soft as butter and looks much more like an outside player.

Brett Moloney from Melbourne is one that springs to mind that would be IDEAL, but theres no chance of that happening, even someone like Leigh Adams from North.

hate to say it coz ive been a fan of jacko but he seriously looks like he has very little to offer at this level anymore
I agree , i think he rates himself too highly. Give up the media crap and start playing footy. GWS, please take him off our hands

From what ive heard mitchell grigg fits this role may be wrong though.... May be around our pick.

Also shane neelson?think thats his name.

Very strange target to single out Bo, he beat Scotland and was one of a very few that could say they beat the player they spent most time on, had two scoring assists including a very nice goal assist to Jack when we badly needed it, had the same amount of turnovers from the same or more possessions as Foley and Cotchin did (his were just MUCH uglier), had more tackles than Cotchin and Martin combined and was one of the best of a bad lot. All our good kicks gave the ball up, Jackson did his job OK and was no worse than them at theirs.

Most importantly, can't you see he's playing hurt? His run is nearly down to the level of Simmonds - the old caravan tow acceleration and suitably massive turning circle. It may be fairly minor, but when you cover the miles these guys have to it becomes a factor, especially for an inside player who regularly needs to dig for a bit of extra zip in the contest.

He left his real form back with a fully fit body about 7-8 rounds ago or even more.

Kind of knew that the apologist would re-surface with this one.
If you aint watching Rayzor, 80%-90% of plays, with Jacko in the link, break down, due to his indecisiveness. Its also a laugh when he actually pretends to have a handle on the play and looks to direct traffic, then pinpoints a target where the traffic used to be, finding an opponent or at best a contest that has us under the pump.
That give to JR turned out ok. It had the commentators lauding his pinpoint precision. Take another look and you might see that he was a whisker away from it being smothered. As for the ludicrous suggestion on "when we needed it badly" , i will let that go through to the keeper, purely on its lunacy.
At the end of the day, if Jacko is in the stats, our FL will suffer. Opposition coaches must love it when he gets it, oppoisition BLs can stop off for a latte, on their way to covering their zones when he stops, starts, stutters and ****s it up again. ;)

Someone mentioned Dangerfield. That would be the perfect fit for us,is there another one?
I'm a Jackson fan and I agree that he's not right at the moment and should be resting.
I also see though that he's making some embarrasing blunders and as a result I would much rather he limped off to correct what it is bothering him and return next year.

The irksome thing is though that javcko is the old easy target.
Put aside age, experience et etc for a moment, and let me firstly say that it's perfectly understandable and quite normal.
But what did the Jackson bashers think of Dustin Martins game?
I thought he was insipid. His tackling was embarrasing, his willingness to work hard defensively non existant and his new found penchant for standing there with back to play in no mans land demanding the footy is just selfish.
yep he's playing like a 19yo in his second season at the moment on a steep learning curve and it's hurting us.

I've watched Martins season extremely closely and yes I don't expect this to be a common thought , however he has been very lazy on occasions and some last half glimpses of brilliance has on occasions masked some poor 1st half efforts .
He has changed roles significantly but I almost spew sometimes when I see players waltz past him especially when you see him treat others like a rag doll when he has the Footy !
