did steve waugh do the right thing by announcing his retirement before the series started?

for a guy who never seemed to chase media coverage and was always focused on winning at any cost i seemed like a strange decision. Have a look at the crowds they have been getting around australia for steve.........now those comments that Buchanan made after the Adelaide test don't seem so strange.

oh by the way why coudn't the greatest captain ever tell his bowler to ****ing bowl a decent line and length. Hopefully this test will be brett lee's last.

I think he was right to do what he did. He avoided two things by doing so. He avoided media spotlight on his performances, and he helped avoid media spotlight on who would be the next captain.

All he needs to do now is score a big double hundred in our record fourth innings winning score later today.

I think I agree about Lee. I used to be a huge fan, but he hasn't performed outstandingly well for very long time.

Sheeeeesh get a grip he is still very young, he has never had to bowling line up rest almost entrily on his sholders and he is 2 games back after a dibilitating injury....

In all other games he has had Gellespie and Mcgrath to bowl tight and he has been told to come on and get wickets, given a situation where he has to do both he will surely struggle!

People acctually think before u talk!

moose - a year ago I would have said exactly the same thing. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. I have thought about it a lot, and to me the cold hard reality is he hasn't been a consistent enough wicket taker over the last two years, injuries or not. His average just keeps going up and up. Like I say, I desperately want him to turn it around, but I don't know how many more chances he will get.

Before anyone hangs me on this. Steve Waugh is my alltime favourite Aussie Cricketer behind Merv Hughes.
But he retired a year to late . If I was him I was him , well like me - 1 year ago I saw the writing on the wall , Australia was a team in decline , not that it was showing then. But the writing starts when they call up players in the mid 30's , meanwhile in the domestic scene - there are no bowlers pushing through ( WA problem for quite a few years in which WA Bigmen shouldve acted on instead of recruiting Steve Nicataris from NSW but thats another matter which will lead to the point of it all. )
Steve Waugh in the mean time - excellent captain - excellent career - the way he conducts himself on & off the field all juniors should be trying to imitate ( except the haircut )
Australian selctors - these are the guys to kill. They are the ones to blame for australia's future problems. They had no balls in trying out new bowlers in series ( such as Bangladesh , New Zealand last series - even though they played well ).
What I am coming too , is Allan Border inherited a team on the rise , Mark Taylor took them to the top of the world , Steve Waugh took them the next level - But now I hope the guy's who are responsible for letting this team get to old - Are patient for lean times. Hayden has another 3-4 years' , Langer for the benefit of the Aussie team has to be gone within 1 year ( dont hang me ), Ponting - Next captain - He should be viewed as next saviour in Allan Border mould. - Martyn - 31- at the crossroads & the scary thing no one on the domestic scene to challenge him - Clark - Batting prodigy - Heaven helps australia if he dont come through- Katich - Gun - Next Aussie captain - Has it all - Gilchrist
- Lean patch at the moment - when he gets enough money to spot counting will come good again - MacGill - Too many losse deliveries - Gillespie - Unlucky Aussie Hero - Lee - Bowls too much ****- He should speak to Lillee to mentor him - McGrath - should retire to fast track Aussie rise - Hadden - Australian heirachy should move heaven & earth to get Bruce Reid in Aussie camp to teach this kid - Williams , Bichel , Hogg - show heart but age and in some cases ability dont see them a long term bet. Warney - drug cheats should **** off - & one peice off advice I will give that hurts me but will give joy if taken. Beau Casson - Move to NSW - Your the next WA spin prodigy !!!

ok, it was perfectly ok that he announced his retirement before the series...otherwise fans wouldnt know there at waughs final game or something

and i wouldnt be worrying about brett lee's line and length, maybe if he learned to bowl BEHIND the crease first...25 no balls for the team in the first innings, jeeeeeeezus.

as for the aussie selectors, well they wouldnt know a good player if it stole their glasses.
simon katich, (obviously) the best up coming talent had to move from WA to NSW before they realised he was half good.
and they're the same selectors who recall an aging lehmann instead of finding someone half decent, and leaving the 12th man as 12th man instead of shoving em where lehmann was.

and finally...what the hell does this have to do with the dockers?

You can try going to a pub where Cousins & Kerr are on the same nite and start something...............

Agree with you Hitman, Lee has bowled absolute crud since his comeback from injury. His only weapon - his speed - has been torn apart by his new bowling action. The only mistake Waugh made was publicly declaring that both Gillespie and Lee should play in the SCG test. Williams or Bichel would have been much better prospects than Lee - Bichel would have got some wickets whilst Williams would have bowled a much tidier line and length and not have given away 200 runs in an innings. Having said that, the whole series has been a batsmans paradise with no bowler, except maybe Kumble in Sydney, getting the better of the batsman (although there was a ground record aggregate of over 1600 runs for the match).

Oh and you can blame Damien Martyn for not winning the test. The Aussies were in a great position before he came to the wicket but he had a horror time against the spinners (once again - even Kartik who was aboluted carted around the ground in the first innings, no pun intended). He knew he was wasting time, he should have done better by the team and thrown his wicket earlier instead of wasting precious overs.

I was lucky enought to be at two days of the Sydney test, the third and the final day and I have to say the Sydney crowds were much better behaved and interested in their cricket and respectful of the opposition than any I have seen at the WACA.
