Yeah Yeah see you in two weeks

Then will see how weak he is.:thumbsu:

I don't think Eade was really serious, he might WAN'T to see something done about it but he's a coach who knows the inside and out of the AFL and knows there's not too much that can be done...

My guess is he was heated at the time just coming off a loss and was venting his anger on the situation.

I can see his point too.

I agree Dr. J. Good win Sainters, way too good on the night. Reckon Eade has done his homework and realised that there is a good chance Dogs v saints in Round 1 Finals. Maybe he is sowing the seed in the Umpires heads if we meet again shortly?? He doesn't make rash comments like some coaches, most of what he seems to say has an underlying motive.

I agree - frustration. No-one likes to lose, and West was a major component of his team's perceived strength. Powell was highly motivated to be effective - busting his gut to ensure a place in the team with finals just around the corner. Ball did some tagging work as well, so did Baker, so did Peckett. Sometimes West was the recipient, but others were too.

Dal Santo gets tagged each week. GT doesn't bitch about it. He helps the other players to form tactics to break the tag.

I was disapponted in Montgomery's tactics - and I'm sure other Saints supporters saw what I saw, but we aren't going around whinging about him being a thug, or Dal Santo not being protected.

Look at the stats - West got 6 free kicks for, whist Dal Santo got 1

Who's not being looked after by the umps?

Take a look at what and how the whinging b itch said he was going to run crying to the umps. sooky lala

Powell is a CHEAT, not a footballer. West had 45 possesions the previous week and is the AFL leading possesion gatherer. The only way Thomas and his tactics, could stop him, was to get a hack footballer to hang on to him for the entire match, sometimes 40 metres off the ball. To me that is not football thats just plain cheating.

And Thomas has never complained about anything to the umpiring fraternity............ yeah pull the other one.

Bulldog Scott West mugged by Saints
29 August 2006 Herald-Sun

THE Western Bulldogs have complained to the AFL about the off-the-ball manhandling of Scott West on Friday night.

But St Kilda coach Grant Thomas has defended tagger Stephen Powell and fired a broadside at the Bulldogs, including coach Rodney Eade.

Eade confirmed yesterday he had rung the AFL umpires' department, seeking clarification and/or an explanation on why West had not been paid more free kicks for what the Dogs considered to be excessively close attention from Powell at Telstra Dome.

"I will be hopeful Rodney isn't able to intimidate the umpires into over-protecting a player," Thomas said.

"Rodney's entitled to his opinion but the 'mob' -- as he refers to us -- we have faith in umpires to make the decision as they deem fit.

"If this is an opportunity for the Western Bulldogs to get an advantage by the umpiring fraternity for a finals game, then that needs to be noted also.

"It's a tough game. The better you are, the tougher it is and that's what makes champions . . . so live it."

West received six frees on Friday night from three of the most experienced umpires in the game: Brett Allen, Hayden Kennedy and Scott Jeffery.

Four frees were paid against Powell -- two for holding West, one after West had disposed of the ball, and one for Powell holding the ball -- and one each against Steven Baker and Justin Peckett.

Those two were also for holding the man. All up, the Brownlow Medal fancy was infringed against five times in a match where Powell and West were seen constantly grappling and holding, sometimes up to 40m behind play.

West had 22 possessions, including eight in the last quarter, against Powell's 10. The Saints won by 50 points.

It's understood Eade asked umpires' coach Rowan Sawers why forwards received free kicks when defenders wrapped their arms around them, but often not midfielders when the same happened at stoppages.

Bulldogs officials on Friday feared West was becoming so frustrated with Powell's tactics he might have lost his cool and thrown a punch.

Thomas, however, praised Powell's performance.

"We were very pleased with his game," Thomas said.

"We don't think there was anything untoward, or unfair.

"But it needs to be noted Powell gave away six free kicks and on cost benefit analysis, six free kicks isn't entirely happy on any given day, so he paid the price for whatever indiscretions he had.

"You can jump and down as much as you like, but umpires will determine the interpretation."

The AFL late last year said it would crack down on off-the-ball incidents, especially at stoppages.

Thomas also argued that what happened at stoppages also happened in the forward line, offering Fraser Gehrig and Nick Riewoldt as examples of players sometimes being grabbed or pushed when going for a marking contest.

``There's aspects we get frustrated about,'' he said.

Thomas said umpires also needed to call free kicks as they saw them, not because they thought they needed paying.

Umpires' boss Jeff Gieschen was unable to be contacted last night.

The umpires paid free kicks against Powell, which is ALL THEY ARE PERMITTED TO DO unless Powell does something reportable. Powell impedes, West gets a free, Powell impedes, West gets a free. Me thinks some of the Doggies supporters want something MORE done to Powell.

As for Dal Santo, he is a champion, and one of the reasons he is, is that he is always willing to take the contact and make the perfect kick, rather than avoid contact and muck up the kick. Perfect case in point was when he was run through by Brent Guerra. Not saying West isn't a champion, but I don't watch him week in week out and therefore haven't seen him do the above.

What Powell did was no different to what Darren Glass of the Eagles does every week to every forward he plays on.
