Over the year there seems to be a certain pattern emerging in our games. Over a 3 weeks period one week we are a 4 quarter team, another a 2 quarter team and another a 1 quarter team.

Block 1:
  1. Richmond - 4
  2. Brisbane - 2
  3. Essendon - 1
Block 2:
  1. Adelaide - 2
  2. Geelong - 4
  3. Collingwood - 1
Block 3:
  1. StKilda - 4
  2. Port Adelaide - 2
  3. Hawthorn - 1
As some would say this is due to a "young team" playing inconsistant footy... I dare say it's a little worse than that... in that we play a red-hot 4 quarter game one week and think "hey we don't need to turn up next week, it'll be a walk in the park".. then we get challenged and put in a 2 quarter winning effort, further fuelling the "we're so good we can only play 2 quarters and win, approach".

This pattern has been with us for the last 3 years... it's a big reason why I feel we can never win 3 games in a row... is it training? is it planning? do we feel on the training track after 2 good wins we need to lighten the load?

I don't know what it is, but I can guarantee you the next two weeks we'll have 1 ripper game, and another half-game ripper win.

Most teams have the exact same issue, it is just the Geelongs, Pies and WB at the minute still win their lazy effort games due to having so much class in their sides.

Like you said, it's youth a little bit even though that is wearing a bit thin, but it is also lack of quality depth of a Geelong type side.

We wont solve the up and down nature of our team until we draft/trade in more talent. Same goes for every other non top 3 team.

Why is it more than "We are young"?

Part of getting experience is not getting ahead of yourself when you have done well and mentally or physically easing off 10%.
There's very few teams that have been able to do it every week........none this year have.

Surely part of being young is putting in a great effort, then mentally thinking that was pretty good, not working quite so hard the next week.

That good news is, our best is as good as anyones, and so far this year our best is appearing more often than not. Our down weeks seem to be fewer and far between.

In the last few years our one or two good games would have been followed by 3-4 bad ones.

It just sucks our "down games" seem to coincide with playing the Hawks and Dons.

exactly Aphrodite.

We are still one of the youngest and least experienced teams, so it's difficult to get 4 quarter efforts every week...even from the top teams.

When we are truly a top 4 team in a couple of years, then the inconsistency will be a thing of the past.

Grabbed a couple of minutes of Ratts on the radio earlier. He said this year he was looking for a final 8 finish and to win a final. That would be a successful year for him.

thats what works for me...

Two years ago, we just missed on the finals and everyone was stoked about it.
Last year, we made the finals and just ran out of steam in the last quarter and lost the final.
This year, and I think most realistic Carlton supporters agree, that the plan is to make the 8 again and win a final this year. Although, having to rebuild our forward structure is a worry despite how good they have been going.
