"After Essendon's loss to Collingwood in the 1990 AFL Grand Final, the club had a greater challenge ahead and it was to stay afloat after heavily investing in securing the premiership cup. The Bombers sought a lifeline from other leagues and the only one willing to accommodate Essendon were the WAFL. 1991 saw Essendon compete in the WAFL allowing an extra weeks rest for all clubs given they'd become the 9th team. The iconic red sash on black was to be altered to not mirror the Perth Demons kit. Essendon settled on a hooped design with white strokes to better differentiate between Perth and West Perth. The hoops design went through minor alterations over the years"
