"The evolution of the North Perth Owls
The AFL decided that the 20th licence would given for a third West Australian team, but must be named Perth.
The successful entrant was the merger between East Perth Royals, Perth Demons and West Perth Falcons.
The colours were easy, but the name was not so.
The East and West were not comfortable with the name Perth. So after considering South Perth or Central Perth they found North Perth more fitting. AFL reluctantly accepted this.
Now was finding a mascot. What kind of demon would a royal falcon flying into hell return as?
The answer was Stolas a demon in the Ars Goetia. Stolas is depicted as an owl with very long legs.
So the North Perth Sovereign Solas were born with a blue and red jumper and a very odd looking black and red owl which of course represented Stolas.
Many were calling the jumper ugly, clashed with Melbourne and after the first season it was canned. Mostly because fans were sick of describing what a Solas was, and ashamed of the long legged owl.
Next season they changed their mascot to North Perth Sovereign Owls with a new jumper. They darkened the blue and put it along side the black while had a red and black owl without legs.
Although most were relieved that the mascot changed they thought the owl looked like it had died and was flying up to heaven.
After just two rounds they ditched the Sovereign and were now known as North Perth Owls. They also came up with a new jumper that everyone was satisfied with. They darkened the blue even further to midnight blue to make it look more sinister. East Perth insisted that blue must be added to the owl plus the added claws, that really did the trick.
So years ahead they sometimes wear their first ridiculed jumper on heritage rounds. But their short lived Sovereign Owls jumper has never been seen again. And oddly enough it’s the rarest and most sought after jumper in the AFL today."
