It's almost becoming time for me to start thinking about purchasing a new notebook. I'm thinking with vista so close (???) to release it's probably worth waiting for that so i could just get it free with purchase.

Is it worth waiting for? when does it even come out?

Are we talking free as in beer? Or free as in speech?

If it's beer free (i.e. $0.00) then it really depends what sort of deal you can get today. If there's no specials going on the machine you want, wait and see. If it's speech free (i.e. comes as part of a package but you are actually being charged a bit more for it to be there) I'd avoid paying for an OS when you've probably already got XP(?).

Just get a laptop that is Vista ready then purchase Vista for free when it's released (torrent).
ye and then not be able to download updates or sp's

hence the reaosn i want an origional with my notebook for free.

Xp will be good for many years to come. Vista isn't necessary, at least in the short term. Well, until you want to taste the DirectX 10 goodness and you'll have to upgrade (and upgrade your GFX card whilst you're at it).

I'd imagine you'd only get the Home Basic version with a notebook. As much as I'm not bothered with Aero, some of the other features you get with the other versions will be handy.

And I agree. DX10 on notebooks in the short term wouldn't be worth it. You'd need the notebook powered by a pretty beefy in next gen GPU. (although a lot of DX10's functionality is in optimization to make things run more efficiently and faster)

Not sure about that. I know that without a HDCP compliant monitor (and other hardware), you won't be able to view True High definition content. You are going to get the content 'degraded' to DVD quality.

if you buy a pc/notebook now u will get the vista garantee - ie for $27 u will get the vista upgrade sent to you.

Its out in a few weeks.

Given MS's history with OS releases, it wouldn't be worth jumping until at least SP 1. It's also wise to check whether you qualify for the upgrade version, as you cannot use the upgrade version from Win ME, 98se, 98, 95.

Buy a macbook pro.
That way if
Viruses
Infestations
Spyware
Trojans
Adware
is full of crap like XP then you can use the best OS ever written in OSX.5 due out in the next few weeks. Dual booting is easy and you can't DB to a OSX on a PC notebook

OSX.5 out in the next few weeks? Do you know somthing we don't?

Anyway, I'm sure to we'll see some news on X.5 in a few days, at MacWorld San Francisco. Along with whos knows what, judgeing bt the teaser on Apples webside.

Yeah I heard OS X.5 will be out soon. I know this is off-topic and it wont be for ages, but what about OS 11? Because I will prob buy a MacBook when it is released.

Apples Official guide is i think Q1 2007 for OSX.5.

On OS 11.
I'm not sure Apple will, i think they have put alot of marketing dollars behind OS 'X'. They're not going to give that to soon, but if your talking within what timeline will the get beyond X.9 (Rumors thing they'll use X.10, X.11, X.12 etc), i think each major update (X.5 -> X.6) is going to take at least 18 months from now, is the rumor mill is correct.

but are there any limitations on software that can be run on dual boot?

The main reason i have never even considered a mac is because theres too much pc software that i need.

Also alot of apps i need for uni (and eventually work) that are available on windows and not mac..

Nope, there are no limitations to what you can run when duel booting, everything that works on Windows, including games as it supports graphic drivers

Here is Half Life 2 fow windows, running on an Intel Mac, using Apple Bootcamp software.

any cons??

Alot have found the duel booting a bit of a pain. It's the best wat to run programs like games, though.

I know of alot of people running Pallells Desktop not the thing if your intendtion is games, but pretty much anything else is fine. It required no rebooting, just open your windows applications/windows itself, and it'll run on the mac desktop, almost as though your running a native Mac app.

how does that perform with resouce intensive apps? eg. Microsoft Visual Studio?

No too sure on that one, i'm sure it would run fine, but it could be one where your better to use the duel boot solution. If system resources are precious, you somthing like Visual Studios, not that it wouldn't work under the Parrallels. By running OSX, Windows, and Visual Studio, you may just start to strech computer resources a little thing, though.

II messed up my link before, so i'll try again here

Apart from the limited support calls I get through my work RE OS/X, I don't really have much to do with Macs (depending on who you are, that may be a good or bad thing!!!).

I am curious though, I have noticed on the Mac system the ability to have Windows open up and operate whilst using OS/X.

Can any Mac guys tell me if this is a dual boot setup or does Windows lie with a virtual environment?
