Could someone explain for me what the difference is for a web site to have hosting or not have hosting?

Thanks.

A website is not much good without someone to 'host' it - ie. store it on thier server, and have it accessible to the general public.

Do you mean "what is the difference between a 'domain' with or without hosting?"

Some companies will discount the price of domain registration if you sign up for their hosting deal. This means that you get the domain rego cheaper, but pay for it with the hosting charges for the duration of the contract.

Yep I definitely meant domain name and not web site, so thanks firstly for that.

As a host, does the provider have the server at a remote site and you upload to that site? Without hosting does the domain owner have the server on his or her own system linked somehow to the providers access?

Also does the domain name present differently

e.g. if bigfooty was the provider would hosted be like harlean.bigfooty.com or bigfooty.com/harlean

and unhosted be like harlean.com

Sorry to sound like such a gumby and thanks for your help.

Hosts generally provide you with space on a remote server that you upload to.

You can (if you have a dedicated server) host your own site.

Either way, you should be able to present www.harlean.com, although some web hosting companies will offer discounted hosting if you use their sub-domain service.
