Worlds Greatest Shave

I know it's not strictly football related, but to get the exposure it would make sense to post it here...

Hey guys, I've decided to take part in this event in light of my workmates story. He and I are both shaving our heads in this great cause as part of a team. Donations can be made at the link below as well as the link at the end of this post. Every little bit helps, even if it's only a few dollars or even cents.

P.S, will post pics. Both he and I have thick hair! And we will also be doing it at work (Dick Smith) infront of people at the shopping centre.

His story is below:
-------------------------------------------

Hey guys so I’ve decided to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave this year

As some of you may know, my family has been directly been affected by someone living with cancer. My younger sister Maria who is turning 12 years old, was diagnosed at 15months with a rare type of leukemia, and has been living most of her life affected by cancer.

Throughout the years, there have been several generous organisations, including the Leukemia Foundation, Camp Quality, the Little Heroes Foundation, Childhood Cancer, and the Starlight Make a Wish Foundation, which have all provided my family as well as Maria with ongoing support to help us cope with her diagnosis. Whether if this was providing opportunities such as family outings, social events with other families and children in similar situations, or just being there to talk to us and letting us know that they understood what we were going through. I myself, have learned to appreciate and love each and one of my family members so much more over the hard and difficult times.

One of the main side effects of Maria’s chemotherapy treatment was her hair loss. I still remember the day that she came home and realized that she had lost her hair. I must admit, I did cry for her. I could not just imagine how girl at such a young age, could come to terms with losing one of her most precious possessions, something that we take for granted every day, something that gave her a sense of identity, and something that made her a girl. But somehow throughout all these years, she has shown her strength and bravery, and she continues to live her life to the fullest.

I guess this is why I decided to do the World’s Greatest Shave. One to give back to the charities and organisations that helped my family and I in the past. Having a first hand experience from the services that these organisations provide, the money received from donations will greatly aid those families of those whose loved ones are living with cancer.

Most importantly I am doing this to put myself in her position, to try and understand how she once felt with the loss of her hair. I must admit, I have contemplated about doing this for a quite a while, and several times I have pulled out (I don’t particularly have the best mug to suit a shaved head!). But I will only have to put up with looking like that for only a short amount of time, whereas Maria does this on an everyday basis. This is much more of a personal achievement for myself, and I am first and foremost doing this for her.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, please let your friends know as well. It’s a great cause, and every donation is welcomed.
