went through the game frame by frame last night, what was pretty clear to me was that in the absence of a genuine structure, Plough put aside the game plan to watch the lads see what they do just free wheelin v the Cats. Astute judges would know that TW has a great track record on the Kadinia track that extends back to his bulldog days ...which in a nutshell is a game of cat and mouse...go for broke in the wind and hold it up when we're against...None of that employed yesterday and if you wanted any more of a signal from the coaches box then look no further than who was thrown into the ruck.

That aside some of the performances cant be ignored., Knobel, Moore, Jackson now have even bigger ???..I forgot to mention Newman earlier, he looked fantastic first game back....not too mention Browny

Above all, we finished the game off and in a 5/10 performance we still managed to scrounge 15 goals. We'll shape alot better than than that with a couple of experienced talls in the F50...Hang in there..

nicely said. i didnt get to watch the game live, so i also watched it more objectively. i had similar observations to you bojangles.

:) AS stated previously, NAB Cup form is irrelevant.

I don't see the hordes of West Coast, Adelaide, St Kilda, Melbourne and Collingwood fans writing their seasons off as many are doing on this site!

Simple fact was Geelong had a far more experienced team and the Tigers had plenty missing.

Result bothers me not in the slightest!

in fact the last quarter effort gives us some real hope. yes we struggled most of the game, but managed to get our structure right with very few talls and kicked 5 goals to 1.

What I got out of the Geelong game ;

  • Brown and Newman building their foundation. Will need almost half a season to see them settle in.
  • The insurance policy that is K Kingsley will be cashed-in during the year.
  • With a "need for speed" gameplan we are slightly exposed with the talls. Our "run and carry" gameplan need 4-5 quality rebounding talls. We drop off sharply after Richo and Simmo, we definately need 2-3 of Schultz, McGuane, Polak, Thursfield, Hughes or even Reiwolt to really step up to the plate this year.
  • TW persistence to continue to play "run/carry" football even under the threat of a blowout confirmed that we where not playing at all costs yesterday. No evidence of man/man or shrewd flooding confirmed this.
  • Geelong's gameplan and quest for new-found respect was far greater than ours. They were intent on making a statement for 2007, we where on trying a few new thing and continueing our training motions.

I would be very concerned if I was a Richmond fan. One would suggest that your season is over before it started!!!
Look forward to 08 Tiger fans, 07 is going to be a shocker...:thumbsu:

If we were serious yesterday, the man you just mentioned would no doubt have been thrown to the ruck in place of tucky. Being a pre season game, im sure terry wanted to see how Polak went playing a full game in defence. He went well.

points from yesterday's game.

  • Brownie is looking sharp and real hungry.
  • Fol has added speed to his weaponry.
  • Newmo stepped in to his stride, like he hadnt stepped out. (real good sign)
  • Richo has "improved", iif that is doeable. Apart from the hammy twinge, looked like he looked 3 years into his career, the way he was striding out with speed.
  • Tambo - needs to chill out and be the star that he is.
  • Gas - he along with us are going to be tearing our hair out with the "new" rule.
But knowing TW, he would have already worked out that a man, filling the space, in front of the leading FF, will provide many beneficial frees for our defence. It will be in the back everytime TW. Just plonk in the space and it will be impossible for the forward to not give away the free.
  • White - looks like a hollywood film star with the new hair do.

Summing up, overall servicable performance by the boys. A few dissapointing signs, but the cats were on an ass licking mission, after last year. We were on a fact finding mission.
The pleasing thing was, we looked to have added more speed to our game, in movement of the ball when we had it, and movement off it when we didnt. ;)

And we were damn accurate in front of goal, something thats been an issue for a while.

The AFL can't support this many Vic teams. You guys and the Roos are the first ones to go when it comes that time. Enjoy your club while it lasts, which won't be too much longer.

I think most of us think that Gas is just a stop-gap. Buying us some time until we can develop a replacement, and perhaps for the first time in his career we have low (realistic ?) expactations of him.

Even with the new rule he copped a couple of bad decisions. These AFL rules tend to get watered down as the season goes on and by mid-year no one remembers them. Gas would have only needed a fraction more slack to have gotten away with 2-3 of them.

Plenty of the other defenders had shockers too (Mal Michael had a 'mare). Perhaps wait a couple of weeks and see how the FBs adjust before potting Gas.

who is potting Gas? For me, is one the top 3 FBs in the league. But he needs our midfield to fire, so people can get off his back. If the mids dont get their act together, a FB can only do so much.
Its like a Gk in soccer, if a side is pummeling the goals with shots, he could have a blinder, but still let a couple through. FB aint any different. ;)

Not sure where he'd be rated these days , but blaming him for yesterdays performance is misdirected and simpleminded at best...Ottens would have kicked 4 on anyone ...No worries bout that

I would get worried.

Dispite being a practice game there was fundamental problems which are not going to eradicate themselves just because it is Round 1 and not a pre-season game.

Are these suddenly going to change?

I'm only going to discuss the fist 2.5 quarters because that's all that mattered. Any talk of how many goals we scored after that is rubbish because the game was over.

Dispite winning the ball from the midfeild early (we dominated center brakes) they carved us up on our forward 50. Every time the pill came back with interst, usually all the way kicked deep into their 50 and marked too easily. How are we going to get forward line pressure? Add KK into the mix? :o

Our midfeild is too small and slow. Tivendale, Foley and Krak vs the big, experienced mature bodies of Geelong?

Yes, we had a poor game; but the extent we were outrun and skilled, and out lack of hunger at the contest around the ground was very worrying.

You're having a lend of yourself!! Sure Tigers outscored the Cats in the last quarter, but ONLY because the Cats put the brakes on. You only need to win by one point in this competeition to progress to the next round. Game was over in first quarter.

i'm not, jeez ook at sydneys start last year, it was pathetic, it's where you stand at about round 10 and round fifteen, thats where the real indicators are!
