This is, arguably, the biggest news in the history of wrestling industry.

Below is a press release from the WWF.

STAMFORD, Conn., March 23, 2001 - World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: WWF) today announced its purchase of the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) brand from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS Inc.), a division of AOL Time Warner.

The purchase of WCW creates a tag team partnership with the World Wrestling Federation brand that is expected to propel the sports entertainment genre to new heights.

In keeping with the company's strategic alliance with Viacom, new WCW programming is anticipated to air on TNN in the near future. The possibility of cross-brand storylines and intrigue, however, may start as early as Monday night during WWF Raw Is War on TNN and the final performance of WCW Monday Nitro Live on Turner Network Television (TNT).

The binding agreement provides World Wrestling Federation Entertainment with the global rights to the WCW brand, tape library, and other intellectual property rights.

"This acquisition is the perfect creative and business catalyst for our company," said Linda McMahon, Chief Executive Officer of World Wrestling Federation Entertainment. "This is a dream combination for fans of sports entertainment. The incendiary mix of World Wrestling Federation and WCW personalities potentially creates intriguing storylines that will attract a larger fan base to the benefit of our advertisers and business partners, and propel sports entertainment to new heights."

"The acquisition of the WCW brand is a strategic move for us," said Stuart Snyder, President and Chief Operating Officer for World Wrestling Federation Entertainment. "We are assuming a brand with global distribution and recognition. We are adding thousands of hours to our tape library that can be repurposed for home videos, television, Internet streaming, and broadband applications. The WCW opens new opportunities for growth in our Pay Per View, live events, and consumer products divisions, as well as the opportunity to develop new television programming using new stars. We also will create additional advertising and sponsorship opportunities. In short, it is a perfect fit."

World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. is an integrated media and entertainment company headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, with sale offices in New York City, Chicago and Toronto. The company is an equal partner with NBC in the XFL, a new professional football league.

Yes this is big news. I do not think that non wrestling fans will appreciate how big.
Both the WWF and WCW web sites have the story as the headline news story. It would be interesting to know the full financial details of the takeover and what this means for the WCW roster. Looking at this list tonight I would say that not a lot will automatically make the WWF as I would say that Vince has taken the cream over the past few years (perhaps Goldberg and Kidman the exceptions). Notwithstanding, a lot to look forward to !

It is bad news. WWF will be running everything, there'll be no competition which'll probably mean less entertaining shows.

Dont worry about a lot of the stars from WCW, they'll be either going to the WWF or staying in the NEW WCW which is in fact run by McMahon.
You'll deffinitely still be seeing Sting, Goldberg, Steiner, Awesome, Lance Storm, Kidman, Rey JR and prob most of the WCW roster but wrestlers like Kronic, Luger, Sid, Hogan and others will probably be overlooked.
Theres also talk that Jeff Jarret and Hulk Hogan want to start up their own feds. If this happens it should be interesting, cant see jarrett going back to the WWF.

Actually i'd have to say its better than WCW just diintergrating and WWF being the only company. At least they still have competition, even if they're making money from both companies :-)

If it was just WWF by itself then the writers would no there is no pressure from competition and they would slack off, and the whole product would be just crap.

The WWF writers are so shocking. The storylines so far fetched that its pethetic!!
Its like watching the Days Of Our Lives.
At least the WCW actually has wrestling in its shows!!!

If the WWF gets stale or they change their shows in some way and you dont like it, theres no alternative, that's why i reckon its a bad thing. I wouldve preferred Fusient buying it and seeing if Bischoff could have a last crack at making it a better show, but its too late now.

Well you haven't watched a WWF show. If you had you would see that they put on good matches.

WCW has a good undercard which saves alot of their shows from being boring since some of the upper card wrestlers don't work as hard as the mid to lower card guys.

As for your the argument that WWF wrestlers have no character or substance, C'mon.

WWF have no real heroes anymore. Stone Cold just comes off annoying and there bad guys like Angle and HHH have no charisma. Then theres the Undertaker who has totally changed his gig?? He used to be this dark angel kinda guy but now hes just a normal guy??

I cant stand the WWF, all the good wrestlers are now in WCW.

I don't buy your argument that all the good wrestlers are in WCW. From the wrestlers you mentioned, HHH is a good wrestler. In 2000 he had several match of the year candidates. Austin has been having great main events recently on Raw. Angle is getting better everyweek. Remember, he only made his wrestling debut at Royal Rumble 2000.

Plus, the WWF have a great mid-card with guys like the Hardy Boys, Edge and Christian, Beniot etc.

Obviously WCW has just as good wrestlers as the WWF. But that's not my point.

I just can't believe that you said that all the good wrestlers are in WCW.

I dont grade wrestlers on there wrestling skills. I judge it on there character, there gimmick, there attitude and there stage presence. To me no one but the Rock gets me excited in the WWF. But the WCW has all the great old school wrestlers, im not going to list them all again cos you know who they are. In the WWF everyone barring the Rock seems to have a shelf life of a few months, i just cant get into it. Even the Undertaker has changed .... very annoying. Oh and your good guy Stone Cold isnt good enough, he has absolutely nothing on Goldberg!
