I have the first one, and have never played beyond a couple of missions. I'd like to get into it for the fun of developing my favourite squaddies, but does the game let you take your time doing that?
From what I've read it sounds like you sort of have to push through and the aliens will keep getting harder if you sit around.
I kind of like the freedom to power level my guys as I want.
