I discovered the loneliest longest walk : between the MCG and Richmond Station,
The solace and comfort of having earphones over my ears and the radio turned off,
The gratitude that the Sandringham train left on time.

Today, I felt very much for the one player who will mistakenly hold himself responsible for not winning the game against Brisbane; he has been identified by his coach of making the fatal mistake of telegraphing his kick to McPhee in those final 16 seconds of the game.
He will carry this burden unfairly because nobody reminds him of all the other mistakes Essendon made: like Fletcher kicking out to from goal to the Lion who then returned the ball for a goal; and all the dropped passes, and kicks for goals from set shots that missed,
and in those final 16 seconds, that there could have been many more team mates who could have lead to give him more options to pass to,
that nobody thought of simply hitting the ball back out over the boundary line for another throw in,
that no one was there to smother Johnathan Brown to prevent him from getting the ball and kicking it to an unmarked Daniel Bradshaw in the goal square.

Yeah! poor Lonergan made a mistake, but it was one of many in the game and one of several crucial mistakes in those final seconds.

For once, I think the coach could have shouldered the blame a little more and not blamed this kid. I hope Lonergan will shrug this off and become a better player. In the many decades that I have followed Essendon, this must have been one that I just feel very uncomfortable about. Why is it necessary to unfairly blame the one player who made one of the mistakes in those final seconds.

Maybe Freo might have saved the day for this youngster - I hope so.

I actually think Knighter was standing up for him in the face of criticism Lonergan was receiving from many. Don't know about the draw being a blessing, but hopefully it won't ruin our finals aspirations.

Another chance to play finals and once again we do a Port Adelaide. Was looking fwd to seeing our team play in the 1st week of September. Not gonna happen now.

Funny, but when Fletcher kicked out straight to the Brisbane player who returned the ball for a goal, I had a strange feeling that was going to come back and haunt us. Lonergan's mistake was one of many - the timing of it blew it way out of proportion. But had somebody tagged Brown, and others double teamed Bradshaw, ...............................

Shit happens. Let's hope Freo's favour helped minimise the loss of the two points..

I don't blame him, we shouldn't really have been in that position to start with. 8 points up with 1:48 on the clock you would think we could have held on.

Anyway stranger things have happened and we're not out of it yet, nobody ever thought the Doggies would knock us off in 2000, hopefully we can replicate this next week against the saints

I'll just turn up to support our guys; but I'm not holding out great hopes unless they rest four more "stars". :p:

Shows more how dumb modern footballers are and how they play how tyhey are coached (instead of following their instincts).

We are taught from the start - no targets to kick to, kick the bloody thing as far as you can along the boundry line so that it is as far from the oppositions goals as possible and the safety of the line is there.

Footballers nowadays - it's all about tranisition and maintaining possession.

Sometimes they need to think and use commonsense.

But I do agree that it is really unfair to blame one player with so many mistakes. It's just this his was a doozy and it resulted in the goal to draw the game.

lonergan had a target in mcphee - he hesitated possibly wanting to chew up more time but then choked a little failing to execute the kick well enough. there were plenty of others during the game that also made skill errors - i don't think it was a bad decision, just a bad kick.

And Brisbane stuffed a kick in too that gave Essendon an easy goal.

My opinion is that players didn't chew up enough time before kicking the ball - Use the full 15 seconds and kick the ball down the line, when the umpire calls play on.
