KB says the AFL Commission knows "stuff all"

Barry Cable before your time Fab?

Yes and no, his younger days, but seem to remember KB being the main offender.

From my recollections KB was not known as hungry for nothing, dont think he troubled the handball stats man, Cable was much the better all round footballer.

Lightening fast was KB, and at the first sign of being touched threw the ball out in front of him (not handballed), pretending he was never in control of the ball.

Bartlett was Ballantyne of a different era.

The AFL have really changed our game a lot over the past 20 years and its not all for the better so I think KB is right on some points.

A good start would to to reduce the number of players on the field to 16

The VFA had it for 25 years and it was a very open game with hardly any packs that you see nowadays. Its also a win win situation as the comp needs a lot less players and saves the clubs a lot of money.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a huge problem with these rolling packs. (which I think are exaggerated anyway) You may have the ball held in that area for a short while, but then the good teams exploit this so that once they get the ball out of that area, you see "slingshot footy" (or whatever you want to call it), where the whole field seems to open up, and get some exciting runs happening down the field.
It is also an opportunity (when teams play it right), to get the big athletic forwards to have the whole forward 50 to themselves in a 1-on-1.

The trouble is I think you will find casual viewers are getting bored with this style of play that resembles Rugby or even soccer and
are not prepared to waste up to 3 hours watching s**t games when there are so many other choices around now.

Even though Im a football fan as opposed to a fanatic for one club I also wont sit and watch boring games any more where in the past I may have hung in to the end hoping things might improve.

Our game was unique with its one one contests all around the ground and spectacular high marks (how many do you see now?) and bumping but now is in danger of losing that uniqueness.

Cabes is one of my all time greats.

KB was hungry for goals, nothing to do with the bouncing issue - Cabes was every bit as good as KB in using the bounce when it was legal. It was the way the law was interpreted in those days.

The comparison of KB & Ballantyne amuses me, nothing like each other.

The comparison was one of not similar football skills, but of being hated by other clubs supporters.

Andy answers KBs criticism & like most AD defence lines its credible :( ... KBs take Monday is not likely to duck the issue ( particularly after the Tiges U9 footy saw the Pies triumphant)

http://www.examiner.com.au/story/2213256/demetriou-knocks-down-kb/?cs=12

Demetriou said on ABC radio he did not understand Bartlett’s criticism because there had been "only two decisions that the laws committee has put up that I can remember the commission has amended" during their respective times at the AFL. "I don't understand this issue that the commission is in control of the game, because they've upheld every single decision that Kevin’s been involved in," said Demetriou, who also sits on the commission.

I guess my problem with KB is that he has admirable goals but achieves them in the worst possible way. His constant tinkering left players, umpires and fans alike bewildered to the point where Nathan Buckley (who was the only player on the Rules Committee) quit in frustration. (And then he wonders why there are no former players on the committee.)
Take this interchange thing. OK, I get it, slow the game down, less players following the ball, good. Admirable. Introduce limited interchange rule in such a way that it can *only* result in contentious last-quarter free kicks that rely on interchange stewards correctly counting to 120 - not so good. Introduce a limited interchange rule for the first time by trialling it in a game in Dubai in 40 degree heat - stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

Interesting observations on interchange by Dennis Cometti after attending Round one of the WAFL - while the AFL are frightened to act to reduce interchange Cometti suggests the WAFC act independently & return a WAFL footy style to something unique as it once was
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/26766938/cometti-afl-lite-does-wafl-no-favours/

Cometti says
As someone who went along to Fremantle Oval last Friday night for the season's WAFL opener between South Fremantle and West Perth, I must say I left slightly jaded.
.. I found the game too faithful a copy of most AFL matches.
Which in it's way is a compliment to the ability of the various coaches involved, the conformity of the players and the follow-the-leader mentality of footy .....how nice it would it be if the WAFL could legislate for itself a point of difference ...

And it's a point of difference that could position our local comp as unique and ahead of the curve.

There's no doubt in my mind the number of allowable interchanges per team per game in the AFL will fall dramatically over the next five years.

Put simply the game was a grinding affair for both players and spectators.
Many times on Friday night the crowd was "treated" to the all too familiar spectacle of every player in one half of the ground.

No one can doubt Comettis love of the game after attending the WAFL albeit a West Perth game, he is much more than a professional commentator, he's a fan !!

70% of the responses in this thread alone think KB is a twat and does not know what he is talking about.
This is why the AFL are doing what they are doing and destroying the sport because the vast majority don't care because they have never actually seen Aussie Rules played, they have only seen AFL played.

The sport is in a huge mess, it is rugby with some rules of Australian Football in it. The younger generation love it but they only like the entertainment aspect, they actually don't care for the sport that much.

I would love to know of the young men just on BF that are under 30 years of age how many of them actually play the sport they so love themselves? It would be a very low percentage.

KB is spot on.
What a truly excellent comment. I saw somewhere that the average age of posters on Big Footy is around the 30 mark, which if if so means a very significant percentage of posters have never seen anything other than AFL. As a fan of almost geological age, who viewed footy well before the VFL morphed into the AFL (and when players wore proper boots and not fancy ballet pumps), KB's comments are 100% correct, especially on the expanded interchange bench (which I consider to be the work of the Devil).

AFL now reminds me of Formula 1, where the rules are continually tinkered with so as to try to level the field (that has not worked) and where a big percentage of the teams are there only to give some semblance of competition, when in fact they are perennial losers.

Another resemblance to FI is that AFL has lost its much grass roots appeal and affordability and is now just another TV-driven entertainment behemoth chasing the mega-dollars.

But not to worry - the commission has read Smoke and Mirrors for Dummies and has now dropped the price of the junk food on offer at the venues. All is saved.

Even watching the game today when they do the long kick out view you can see every player on the ground all running to the same spot on the ground. I understand every sport evolves but our game is more spectacular when we have one on one contests all around the ground and stay at home big forwards that kick bags of goals. Our game was fine until clarkos cluster happened and every team tried to reinvent that game plan.

yes. thats all they've done. nothing else. ok then.
Deary me, looks like I should have added sarc// off. ;)

PS agree with your earlier comment on goalkicking, but maybe that is partly because the day of the specialist full forward seems to be almost gone. Would Peter Hudson (the best full forward I have seen, imo) get a game these days?

Yo clearly missed out on the delights of 2005 2006

Interesting points.
I love AFL but I never really can sit through a VFL game.

Hey CakeEater
In Victoria KB is a presenter on SEN with his own radio show and as an entertainer first and lastly he makes outlandish comments as a living to generate interest in his program.
Forget his standing as a player within the game he is quite simply a troll.
I know being from Perth it would seem this is big news but quite simply 99% of us dont listen when KB speaks.
I love listening to KB even though I too dissagree with most things he says. He's entertaining just the same.

The VFL is gold and will always have a place. Still good quality footy with benefits. 1: Full strength beer in a can $3.50. 2: Hotdog & chips $4. 3: No eyesore led signage. 4: Room for the young kids to run around and not get bored / restless stuck in a stadium seat. 5: Watching the coaches address. 6: Can kick the footy on the ground at all breaks.

Are you meaning the VFL that grew into the AFL or the VFL that came out of the VFA?

For me, the latter is always more entertaining than the former, especially as the AFL moves to a glitzy American model with "entertainment". The game is the entertainment, not fireworks, dancers and synchronized cheer routines.
