And to add to that:Was doing abit of reading today and found out that Aussie Rules and Football (soccer) were iron ally variants of Rugby Football (which is now called Rugby Union).
The Football Association (FA) was founded by combining both Sheffield Rules and Cambridge Rules Football.
And in early variations of soccer players were allowed to catch the ball and therefore receive a free kick from it (now known as a mark in AFL).
Association Football (soccer) was called 'soccer' nearly a full 2 decades before it is first recorded as being called the singular 'football'. Australian soccer fans who get pissy about people calling it soccer and calling AusF/AmF/RL 'football' really give me the shits. If anyone has a right to whinge about other sports ripping off the term 'football' it's Rugby Football i.e. the original 'football' fans.
