  • Absolutely fantastic mate. Still hasn't sunk in properly.

Watched the game at home but I was that pumped and doing some ridiculous Dancing Homer moves that I'm looking forward to actually seeing what went on.

I'll wait for the radio coverage optioned DVD.

    Footnote; TWITA imposters suck.
Best weekend of my life mate! Besides Arsenal losing to Hull, but we'll ignore that!
Now all we need is Storm to slap Manly around like the bitches they are.
Did you enjoy your weekend buddy?
You're the only Storm supporter I know, so thanks for smashing the shire bogans. If the Storm can pants Manly again, it'd make my year.
    Philhawk.

I will restate my previous visitor message.

Confident your teams can win the premierships to swoop up the AFL-NRL double crown?

Probably your best chance for a few years!
    Hey Philhawk,
I guess i am a bit of a newb so can't start new topics but thought the following might make for a good discussion...

Hey Guys - been a member for a while - like to read the forums a lot but just don't normally have time to post.

On Footy Classified last night they showed the following stats along the lines of:
    Contested possessions:
    Geelong 1st
    Hawks 16th

    Clearances:
    Geelong 2nd
    Hawks 14th

These stats look a little alarming at first glance. But don't worry about it just yet. They are misleading. The true stats paint a better picture.

Now anyone with a little statistics training knows that totals are meaningless when results rely and are influenced by other factors. Geelong and Hawthorn play a very different game style; Geelong possess the ball more, hawks rely of the zone and turnovers with a higher disposal efficiency.

So in this case comparative totals are what matters. That is, what are our number of clearances compared to our opponents. So for the season (excluding the prelims) it breaks down like this (according to pro-stats):
    Contested possessions:

Geelong had 112 more contested possessions than their opponents for the season (avg. 4.9 per game) Rank 2.
Hawks had 45 more contested possessions than their opponents for the season (avg. 2 per game) Rank 5.

    Clearances:
Geelong had a total of 35 more clearances that their opponents (1.5 per game) Ranked 3.
Hawks had equal amount of clearances than their opponents (0 per game) Ranked 9.

(now for those true stat buffs out there - yes we could go further and do total opponent differential as percentage of team total but that is asking just too damn much).

Anyway, I can live with the fact that Geelong may have 2 more clearances than us and maybe 5 (going on the stats, most likey less) more contested possessions than us. I think with our greater kicking efficiency (i think we are 3 percentage points higher) and the zone, the way we capitalise on turn overs we are in with a red hot chance.

And the round 17 clash reflected this trend.
Contested Possessions: 38 to 36 in Geelong's favour (Difference of 2 - above anaylsis is spot on).
Clearances: 31 to 26 to Geelong (difference of 5).

Only thing we lacked was efficiency. we had a low of 75% that night compared to Geelongs 79%. If we bump that up to our usual figures i think that is pretty much the difference.

Anyway, can't wait for the weekend. I think its important to savour the entire week, enjoy and don't worry. As we have found out over the last 17 years - this is generally a rare occurance. Enjoy it and be confident that it is in the players and coaches hands.

    GO hawkers!!!!
most successful club of the past 50 years!
G'Day Phillip. What do you think of the chances of a Hawks-Storm premiership double?
I think it's wrong no one has sent you a hot female to oggle, so let me be the first.. I know you will enjoy her at nights, when.. you're alone!

Shame that we didn't get up against the tigers. I got a text from my brother giving me s**t about hawthorn losing to his team.
Hey sorry we played phone hockey a while back ... Hope you've been well mate ...
    Hey phil,

See if you can come down to the Hawks vs Swans game. I noticed that Gary Shadforth is going to come along. Would really love it if you do come along.
This guy loves his cricket. Good on him for doing so. I have got a cricket question for you phil.

What do you think of the Marlon Samuels scandal with the bookies. Do you think that he will cop the 2 year ban?
Phil. Stop watching the IPL and go to bed. (Warney or Gilly team.... Warney for me to win this one)
For possibly the best poster on BigFooty this is far to quiet...
