Hard player very solid defender

74 Richmond – Taylor Hunt (Sandringham / 183 / 80)

Comes from an athletics background and is someone that has not played a lot of footy. Suspect he may go a little earlier than here as clubs may see a fair bit of upside. Plays a variety of roles but will probably be used in a role that allows him to run and receive. Was a solid contributor all year and has a terrific work rate. The knock is going to be his foot skills. The attraction is that the upside is probably pretty large.

Port Adelaide Pick 54 Taylor Hunt
A power athlete with very good acceleration and a strong AFL suited body. Hunt has an athletics background and has only recently really taken his footy seriously. Hunt is a strong kick and may start his career down back until he builds up his endurance to run through the midfield. Explosive speed and running half back player

Outlook

VFL Practice Match 1/3/09 V Bendigo....Comment by Shake & Bake

Taylor Hunt - Played half back all game, got a bit of the ball, did his bit, likes to run forward and leave his opponent which seemed dangerous but his run was helpful for the side.

VFL Practice Match 7/3/9......special comments by Shake and Bake

Taylor Hunt - didnt really see him do much, laid a couple of good tackles but also got caught for 1 or 2 aswell, he does back himself but didnt really do much attacking wise today.

Re: No. 38: Taylor Hunt

Taylor was sensational today. A young David Wojak. He knows when to use his speed and his long goal to give us the lead today was critical. Can't wait to see him develop into a senior player.

Re: Like a phoenix from the ashes - Geelong Board player review is back!

Taylor Hunt –

The pre-season brought many new things for Taylor Hunt. The young lad who by all accounts is also a skilled golfer was under the guidance of new Geelong coach Chris Scott who had promised his players if you play well you’ll get picked. This is something perhaps a lot of the young guns were not used to who, under Bomber, had been dropped for the return of senior players despite their good form.

But not to digress on a negative tangent about the past, with the pre-season also came a new nickname. Poodle was born and Taylor banished after a rather pompous haircut. And now it has stuck.

Not quite a breakout year for the boy from Beaumaris but an impressive one nonetheless. His pace and carrying ability, something that it is thought that Geelong lacked, gave hope to his rise as the new Wojo. In 2011 he was able to add 13 games to his seven from his debut year in the AFL.

This year Poodle was able to average just over 14 disposals per game with a highlight being his 28 disposal game against Port Adelaide in round three, which included 19 handballs. In round 17 against Brisbane he was able to kick his first goal of the year and the second of his career (the first being a memorable bomb from outside 50 on debut against the Eagles last year). In this game he also amassed eight tackles.

For those who followed him Hunt’s form in his first four rounds were exceptional. His attack and disposal was outstanding. However in round five against Hawthorn he suffered a ligament strain in his knee and was never able to truly recapture his form. He returned two weeks later in Geelong’s controversial win over Carlton and played eight more games. There after he played little senior football and spent the later part of the season in the VFL side.

There is still division on where he will end up playing though. While his pace makes him the ideal shutdown backman for small forwards like the ever-delicious Rioli, during the year he spent time on the wing where he also performed admirably as well as some time in the middle.

In all we can say this; it appears Wells has snuck another gem in young Poodle who from the draft position of 49th in the 2008 draft has improved greatly in skill and ability. According to Wikipedia the poodle was initially bred as a gun dog and from what Geelong supporters have seen so far that’s what we have; a gun, dogged player.
