And why has he never ever looked like having a role at the club pre Nicks ?

Roo has more say over the footy program than you realise over the past 6-7 years
Roo joined the board late in 2014 and Bassett joined Port at the end of 2015 when we had already promised the vacant defensive coach position to Podsiadly.

Burton was a GM position, hence why the board may have some involvement in it. We also had a CEO who knew nothing about football and just seemed to follow everything Roo told him, which wouldn't be the case with Silvers. Roo would not be getting involved in coaching hirings below the senior position.

High profile sacrifice. Do you think Port after all these years have just come to the conclusion he can’t coach?
He’s also a ‘different’ personality so it’s possible he may have rubbed Hinkley or someone senior up the wrong way in the end

But yep there was always going to be a scalp after losing 2 finals and reappointing Hinkley

Bassett has never been linked to us in his coaching career , almost like it’s off the table . Even now when we are desperate for someone and he’s sitting right there available

And part of that is that he’s not a crows insider and not one of Roo’s guys

Or we go back to the obvious thing of having Nicks who is selecting his assistant and has worked with Bassett for multiple seasons maybe not wanting him.

He hasn't been linked to us because he's been employed by Port Adelaide. It's not a giant conspiracy theory, how often do coaches in Adelaide switch clubs unless they're forced to?

I’ll agree to disagree respectfully

I'd love for Bassett to coach at Adelaide

Mostly so that he doesn't go back to Norwood and turn them into a juggernaut again
They've been busy in the off-season already. Nabbed Cooper Murley and Allistair Lord from the AFL delist pile and some handy guys like Ben Simpson and Billy Cootee.

This is a very measured and reasonable response.

There have been some executive level decisions that I'm sure Roo has had strong input into - but we shouldn't overestimate how far that goes. He's still a board volunteer, and this would very much be an operational decision.

Also ....doesn't the question need to be asked ..why was Bassett the only line Coach let go ????

I hope we don't get Basset.

Every line he coached at Port was poor when he coached it.

Yeah he did well at Norwood. First ex AFL player to bring an AFL type game to the SANFL.

Just dont think he is a great AFL level coach.

Wouldn't mind him on the 5AA sports show. His media stint before coaching was pretty good.

The irony of this persistent but obscure attention seeker never fails. Each and every time. Nothing to add, same cartoonish drive by style

Always the same, always lacking the same self awareness, always disappears into his burrow afterwards.
But hang on..

regardless of the knowns and unknowns of CTE

at what point does the AFL and the crows have a duty of care to step in and say “sorry Will, but enough is enough.. we cant let you take any further risks“

the precautionary principal in-acted.

its clear that Will is missing the skill or ability to protect himself in certain contests or maybe he’s just unbelievably courageous or maybe he’s just dumb as dogshit on a football field?

how many concussions has he had in his still short career so far?.. it already feels like about half a dozen or more up till now..

at what point does someone else pull the plug for him if he’s not willing to do so himself?..

given moving a young player like him off the main list and onto the rookie list feels like a step towards delisting at contracts end… maybe the club is already getting on the front foot.
