Past #41: Corey Wagner - #43 '15 National Draft - 8 NM games - one Snapchat scandal - thanks Wags

Think we'd have been open to selecting him and putting him on our senior list. But later than expected bids on Hipwood and Keays meant we had two decent picks at 39 and 47 and some sliders meant we rated a couple of other prospects better. And the fact that we had only 5 senior spot open meant Wagner missed out. That's the nature of the game now, other clubs have a strong chance at gaining access at these academy players too. Hopefully Corey does well for North Melbourne :thumbsu:
You may be right, but I'm still staggered that given recent history, Brisbane would choose not to draft any half decent Queenslander.

Well it is a little harder for the Vic Country lads to relocate to an AFL club back in their home town ;)

Same Wagner as that guy from The Recruit???
Yes. Delisted rookie at port. Trained solidly over the last few months in brisbane (voss connections). North liked what they saw throughout the show. Especially the composure he showed when jumping off the roof of Etihad stadium...cool as a cucumber until immense pressure.

Delisted rookie. Sloppy seconds.

Sounds like our kind of man.

For what its worth Corey Wagner was generally rated higher than Ben Keays for a lot of his junior career. The two used to battle it out in the local Brissy comp and more often than not Wags took the chocolates.

Have always rated him very highly; he has a beautiful penetrating kick and a fair bit of pace to boot. I think his only knock has been his tendency to go missing/get fumbly as the pressure rises, but this is something that can be ironed out fairly easily with confidence.

I know him personally to and he's a ripper of a kid, you guys have got yourself a gem :thumbsu:

When reviewing the draft Sanderson said similar. He was ahead of Keays but this year he fell a bit but he was only slightly behind him.

Yeah probably 2014 when Keays made under-age All Australian that he began to pull away. But I specifically recall the 15's schoolboy champs Corey making the AA team when Keays did not.

LOL.

This is so far off the mark

so in your opinion whats his downside?

I think he just struggled to impose himself on games, especially when stepping up to the national carnival level/NEAFL Lions level. He was played out of position for most of the year as an inside mid and he just doesn't have the skills below the knees to excel at that position.

He is very much a natural defender in my eyes, he can take a nice intercept mark for a guy not even six foot and I believe he is at his best when receiving on the outside. He's not going to be a Brownlow medallist but I think he can have a long career in a specialist-type role. Think a more skilled, better upside Ben Jacobs.

Seems to match what Lewis said when stating he could play roles down back.
