A question for fans who have travelled to SA

Full article below, but one point made is.....

"Supporters from visiting AFL clubs are routinely escorted post-match from the arena by security staff to prevent clashes with fans of the Adelaide clubs, who are considered among the most parochial in the country. "

Personally, I have been to most Port home games (and a couple of Adelaide home games), and have never seen fans from visiting teams escorted by security. I've never even heard of it happening.

Perhaps those that have travelled to SA for a game can shed some light?

Thanks!

Security review for Footy Park
August 12, 2005

SECURITY measures at AAMI Stadium will be reviewed following recent alleged incidents at the Adelaide AFL venue.

The SANFL, manager and owner of the stadium in Adelaide's west, said new security initiatives will be considered in the review to also encompass SANFL venues.

There have been unconfirmed reports of recent violence outside AAMI Stadium, the home ground of Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs in the AFL.

Supporters from visiting AFL clubs are routinely escorted post-match from the arena by security staff to prevent clashes with fans of the Adelaide clubs, who are considered among the most parochial in the country.

SANFL general manager Leigh Whicker said the security review was ratified at a meeting of SANFL club managers.

He said negative behavioural trends at sporting venues throughout the world and across a broad range of sports have made the issue a major priority.

Mr Whicker said current security arrangements at AAMI Stadium and SANFL grounds were put in place two years ago. "The strategies which were implemented . . . will be critically evaluated and new initiatives will be considered to ensure that the football public can enjoy a day at the football in a safe and enjoyable environment," he said.

Well, as far as the (alleged) security escorts go - like PowerKat, I've never seen them but maybe there might be something for the visiting cheersquad. Even if it's true - so effing what? Just a normal precaution in a crowd situation, it doesn't necessarily mean there's some sort of huge danger there that isn't present at other grounds.

If it happens in Adelaide, but not at other grounds, then all it shows is that the Adelaide ground managers are doing a better job than others.

News to me that's for sure.

This sort of stuff would never happen anywhere else though would it ?

Interesting, article points at no facts, just uses the wording "alleged incidents" to cover a multitude of missing facts. Since 1991 I have not seen violence at footy Park, we normally have visiting supporters in the row infront of us and 99% of the time it is a lot of fun.

We were shielded by 4 security guards and a couple of police after the Port Adelaide v Sydney final in 2003 and asked to remain in our seats for a couple minutes after the game to let the crowd around dissapate. A couple of security guards then followed us to the exit to make sure everything was fine.

Can't say I ever felt threatened during the game or after, just assumed they did that for all visiting supporter groups at Footy Park based on previous incidents. It was the only time that has happened to me before and it took me a couple of seconds to realise what they were doing.

I am a Swans supporter in Melbourne so am used to sitting in a pro home team crowd and giving a little back.

this may pan from last weeks game.

A Crows supporter and her son ... well actually her son was apparently assaulted after the game by an opposition supporter. 5AA mentioned it last night .... got the impression police were looking for more witnesses.

Had a few morons making smart comments on the way out after last years Crows v Freo game, but nothing that warrants security escorts. Although the crowds there are more feral than anywhere else, it does sound like a beat up.

Been there once for a crows game and after hearing all the stories was ready for a big afternoon of abuse.

I not sure if it was because it was the first game of the season in 2000 and the season started earlier than usual because of the Olympics but I found the crowd to be civilised mostly family atmosphere. We even moved around a bit in the end because we felt we wouldn't have experienced Footy Park unless their was hostility. We left a little disappointed

I have been attending Footy Park annually for 10 years. No problems untill this year - some Adelaide supporters are feral imbeciles: obviously coming out of the woodwork as think they have a chance of winning it. Favourite routine is calling Sydney supporters NTTAWWTters (inrteresting given a certain former premier and Snowtown) and generally displaying a fixation with Adelaide/SA rather than football. This is not evident in Port supporters who generally have a greater understanding of football and club sports, although they are uglier (particularly the women).

The only fight I have seen this year in the oposition area was Port Adelaide v Richmond, and that was between two Richmond supporters.

Maybe the other venus could follow suit and escort the visiting supporters out, sounds like a good idea to me. Especially at the GABBA.

I've never seen anything happen at AAMI ever. But I'm sure stuff happens. When you have crowds of 30k-40k it's not hard to find a few idiots no matter where you go. I've seen it at other grounds. I know it must happen here.

Having security around opposition supporter groups is good idea though. If you can stop potential conflict before it happens then do it.

Haven't been there for the football, but if you go out at night you may need to be on your guard if you venture to the seedy hellhole that is Hindley street.

i went to port v bulldogs in adelaide this year.. the port fans are timid and quiet.. if the balls not nearby they sit there silent, when its near that abuse the umpire.. i sat on the wing the cameras could see and im ceretin that some of them would stand up and pretend to yell and throw their arms around so they might possably get a close up on the big screen or somthing, very odd.. and their town is crud

Hilarious and extremely ignorant post due to a blinding love of your club. Congratulations :)

Sorry, which part of my post is hilarious and blinded by my love of my club?

The part where I said I've never seen a violent incident at AAMI? That part is true.

The part where I said that it makes sense to have security for visiting supporters, that doesn't mean there's a huge problem?

Care to actually make a point, or are you just the sort of idiot who throws dumb insults instead of saying something half coherent?

Forgive my ignorance but we get a average of 35000 people to AAMI each week and are security appear to take measures to restrict the damage done by a very small minority and we end up with a saftey issue from people out of it?
I would rather aami trying to control a select few idiots than what happens in other grounds where if your a interstate fan visiting and become a victim of idiots you actually get blamed by the security when youve done sweet fa but turn up and see your side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
