Those are very healthy figures for Sydney, considering the Swans were not even playing.

The following just goes to show how important a successful Sydney is to the AFL.

2.58m goal for Seven’s AFL
By David Knox on September 28, 2008

Channel Seven’s broadcast of the AFL Grand Final was the biggest television audience of the year -outside of its own Olympics coverage.

A whopping 2.58m viewers watched the Geelong v Hawthorn match, up on 2007’s 2.57m viewers.

The biggest audience tuned in for the end of the game, when the Presentations were shown.

In Melbourne alone 1.28m viewers watched the event, followed by Sydney (382,000), Adelaide (335,000), Perth (327,000), and Brisbane (256,000).

The previous biggest non-Olympic audience this year was the Australian Open final (2.35m) whichw as outside of ratings. The third State of Origin match hit 2.14m.

The 2005 Grand Final won by the Sydney Swans remains the biggest AFL audience with 3.39m while Beijing’s Opening Ceremony remains the year’s best with 3.31m viewers.

Maybe Seven may learn from this and have a live feed into QLD and NSW on Friday night finals games instead of the crap 1 hour delay watching Better Homes and Gardens

Surely the AFL easily winning the timeslots in Sydney and Brisbane is what matters most.

What? It was a Saturday afternoon! It was up against fierce competition like old movies on Nine and Totally Australia on Ten. I'd be pretty ****ing worried if it hadn't of easily won the timeslot in Sydney and Brisbane!

They couldnt be bothered showing the players of the Hawks singing the club song after the game .

I saw it today on ch 9 .

Re: 2.6 Million watch AFL GF on 7

I have no idea how this stacks up with other years, but I am suprised that only about 13% of Australians tuned in to watch it.

That was friggin' awful by 7 to go to the news when it was clear the players weren't that far away from signing the song. Disgraceful effort!

You're assuming that people in Brisbane and Sydney have nothing better to do on a Saturday arvo except watch tv

Especially as half the news coverage is about the Grand Final anyway!

I wouldn't worry about that. The TV ratings can only be accurate when compared on a very specific basis to other TV ratings, not really as a figure for how many actually watched the game.

Last year:

AFL GRAND FINAL GEELONG V PORT ADELAIDE Ten 2,572,000 321,000 1,214,000 272,000 378,000 386,000

Re: 2.6 Million watch AFL GF on 7

The true number of people that watch the Grand Final, especially in Melbourne is impossible to figure out. The majority of people I know go to some party or a bbq and watch it with a bunch of other people. Not to mention people watching it at fed square, other live sites, pubs around the state, footy clubs showing it. It would be interesting if someone figured out a rough number of actual people watching the game.

Re: 2.6 Million watch AFL GF on 7

Grand Final day is awesome you can't beat it, the build up is brillant and I love the night before when they have Grand Final Marathons on.

Channel 7 did a great job this year in broadcasting the Grand Final their first since 2001. They showed Ten how it should be done.

I was glad there was no 5 min warning bullcrap either :thumbsu:
