China using Government controlled capitalism has brought more people out of poverty than any other country in history. Pointing at their treatment of Muslims Uygurs whilst the US supports a genocide in Gazza, or the US treatment of prisoners in guantanamo bay, US war crimes in Afghanistan… illegal wars, Iraq, the spring uprising, running out of bombs in Syria…. It's more that it's a game for influence, and when America is distracted from Europe let alone the Indo Pacific by their own compromised domestic politics, we're very much on our own trying to defend the independent governments in the region. It's a soft power contest, but soft power seems a weak term for the way that China in particular play this game - their espionage has always been exceptionally well funded and supported by a strong state with a lot of professional experience and tactical flexibility. If other regional governments are compromised or corrupted, or fall due to coups or similar, the relative position of countries supporting democracy and free enterprise is weakened, while the relative position of authoritarians and oligarchs is strengthened. If our own cabinet were to be compromised or corrupted, it would be worse. It's pretty simple and black & white, and idiots like Keating are fools to ignore this truth. Or potentially worse, but I'm not going to go down that path.
Of course Dutton is an idiot to demand the politician in question be named. ASIO won't compromise operational matters by revealing this and they shouldn't. But this isn't hot air, it's just protecting our independence and our interests in a world where there are absolutely real threats to these things that need to be measured and defended against in calm and precise manners.

That's thr problem when we let Canberra crats make decisions, ADF didn't have half the problems until they moved projects away from the cities where people actually know what an plane or tank is amd there is much larger recruiting pool
