Best Collingwood Team Made Up Of Players From My Era of Watching

Hard to argue against anybody in that side. You could have included many others like T Cloke, Crosisca, Wright, Max Richardson, Price, Carman, Davis, Potter, Tony and Ray Shaw, Heater and still not been wrong.
Barry Price was another Pie I worshipped. Oozed class and courage.

These things are nearly impossible to do, not least because of changing ways in which footy is played.
I think the same. I look at most of the teams and think great player, yep you can't leave him out. But most of these defences aren't coping with a forward press.

I think you’ve got a selective memory there. Rocca wasn’t that great close to goal either (better than Cloke I’ll pay though). Cloke was the best contested mark in the league for a good 6-7 years though and I think that pushes him well ahead. Probably room for Rocca on the bench or in a pocket.
Pebs missed a few but was generally far more reliable. I think he inspired his teammates in a way Clokey failed to do. Clokey stood up in the 2011 prelim - he was a colossus that night but you could make a twenty minutes compilation of his shanks and misses. Even in that matchwinning performance in 2011 two of his kicks under no pressure deep in the last term were shocking shanks I couldn't kick if you paid me! He nearly cost us the 2010 flag too by missing two absolute sitters late in the second term. You could feel the energy escaping from the crowd and team and the whisper in all our skulls was "Have we just blown the GF?" I recall that buzz of fear around me in the standing room as some in the media had said Cloke's mental issues in front of goal could coast us when it mattered most.

Fair argument. I remember that whole second half of 2010 the fear building up that the constant poor accuracy in front of goal by Cloke (and others) might cost us, and then it almost did.

But I'm a Shaw family nut, and I dont think you can leave out the 1990 premiership captain. He was not a superstar but he had what we needed when we needed it most.

P.S I saw my first live game at Vic Park in 1968, so you beat me by two years.

They’ll always be pretty subjective, we all look for different things in footballers so our ratings vary accordingly.

‘66 for me.

1969 for me. VS Carlton at Princess park.
I was 5 years old.
My old man was a Carlton supporter. I wasn't following any club at this stage.
Pies won by 64 points.
John Greening with 7 goals and Peter McKenna with 3.
I asked the old man to buy me a Collingwood jumper with the #6
because McKenna had a Beatles style haircut.

I was there that day. One of the indelible memories was being squeezed up a metre or two from the fence ( I was 10) and only getting glimpses of the action as the crowd parted but I saw Greening slot a goal in that third term when we went on a rampage. I could feel the electricity all around me and after the game a drunk Collingwood fan ruffled my hair as we walked out and said "Go PIES!" and I felt like I truly belonged to the tribe. That's a wonderful memory.

I wish they still had tape of that game and many other classics around that time. We came back from ten goals down against St Kilda at Vic Park in 1969 or 70 and in 1978 we came back from a huge deficit against Richmond at the G and won. I found about a one minute clip from that game and a few seconds from the Carlton classic at Princes Park.

Apologies to Brody Mihocek, Tyson Goldsack and Alan Toovey.

Not a bad side. Don’t think you can put Fraser as starting ruck ahead of Grundy though. Pies were consistently terrible in hit outs for his entire career

How close was didak for you?
I watched my first live game in 1966. This is maddeningly tough but a good way to pass some time as we look toward Friday night and another season filled with hope and excitement.

I'm sure I've left out a few legends as I simply did this in ten minutes off the top of my head.

Scott Burns Gary Pert James Clement

Brayden Maynard Darcy Moore Jeremy Howe

John Greening Scott Pendlebury Darren Millane

Peter Daicos Anthony Rocca Gavin Brown

W Richardson Peter McKenna James Elliott

Len Thompson
Nathan Buckley
Dane Swan

Interchange: Peter Moore, Steele Sidebottom, Jordan DeGoey, Mick McGuane

Nick Daicos would probably be in if I selected this team in 2025.

Now who have I forgotten or overlooked that should be in?
Would you take Elliot over Didak?

Been watching the Pies since the start of the 80s.

Burns Presti H. Shaw
N. Daicos Moore Clement
Brown Buckley Millane
McGuane Cloke Didak
P. Daicos S. Rocca Davis
Monkhorst Pendlebury Swan
Int: Pert Williams Wright Sidebottom

When you look bag, geez we've had some good wingers (Millane, Brown, Wright, Sidebum, J Daicos) and key defenders. But we've struggled for tall forwards and rucks. I considered moving Gavin Brown to FF as he played there a lot in 1990, putting Wright on the wing and adding Tony Shaw or Licca to the bench.
