Best Death Doom? Hmm, I'd take into consideration:

Thorr's Hammer - Dommedagsnatt
Winter - Into Darkness
Goatlord - Reflections of the Solstice
Paradise Lost - Gothic
Esoteric - Epistemological Despondency or The Pernicious Enigma
My Dying Bride - hard to name a release there, perhaps first 2 or The Dreadful Hours

Would be my choices.

err

none of those are even close to being top tier death doom or funeral doom. MAYBE thorrs hammer

winter is what metal hipsters quote
paradise lost...bleh
esoteric that is a good album but in the same league as ahabs debut? please man....
MDB and goatlord...come on now

off the top of my head, over the ones you quoted, i'd take albums from Morgion, Saturnus, acid bath, disembowelment, evoken, inborn suffering, void of silence, the prophecy, runemagick, mythological cold towers....

Perhaps could name Thergothon Stream from the Heavens as well.

Find Ahab and Evoken boring somehow. Acid Bath too undoomy. Runemagick I like a lot, but somehow mostly listen to the early stufff that is not as doomlike, so I left them out like Asphyx, Incantation and similar stuff. Mythological Cold Towers and disembowelment never really impressed my that much. Decent stuff. Don't think I know the rest. Saturnus play close to my place next week, in another location I would check them out, but not now...

My top 5 funeral/death doom bands would be not in any particular order, but Ahab and Draconian would be 1 and 2 though.

1. Ahab.
2. My Dying Bride.
3. Draconian.
4. Saturnus.
5. Ophis.

I've probably leaving a couple of bands out, but I can't think straight today, I'm having goddamn nosebleeds, because I haven't been taking my blood pressure medication, urgh!!! ^_^

I'm not sure if you can consider Paradise Lost a 'complete' doom these days. I love the band, but they're more Gothic Metal. But their earlier stuff is legendary.

Some of my favs, slanted more towards the melodic death/doom sound I guess...
  • Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You & Veronika Decides to Die
  • Morgion - Solinari
  • Paradise Lost - Gothic (their only death/doom album IMO but certainly not their best album...)
  • Ataraxie - Slow Transcending Agony
  • Slumber - Distress
  • Rapture - Songs for the Withering & Futile
  • Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
  • Necare - Ruin
  • Swallow the Sun - Hope & New Moon
  • Anathema - Pentecost III (Silent Enigma for pure doom without the death).

Paradise Lost have been parts doom and parts death but only on Gothic were they both simultaneously.Have their doom moments nowdays, but not until The Plague Within comes out in June will they have included any 'death' in their sound in the last 20 years.

MDB - not much death from Turn Lose the Swans onwards (s**t thats over 20 years ago as well). Their last album their best in a long time. Splashes of harsh vocals but not much else.

Ataraxie have moments of genius, but overall i wouldn't put them right up there at the top. Morgion, well A Slow Succumbing and The Mourners Oak are the best tracks imho and they are both on cloaked in ages....

Remember this classic Dee? When the s**t hits the fan at 7:50 it makes you want to destroy planets n stuff

Hey i pulled the trigger on that CLA45. Picking it up tomorrow morning.

Prepare your anus, hindley street

EDit: Doesnt the main guy from Fleshpress have his own porno mag or something?

Not sure, why? Is there something in that youtube clip that shouldnt be there?

On the Lexus, nothing happened. I originally wanted a CLA45. Opportunity came up. As nuts as the ISF is, on the inside it is very bare in terms of tech and features. It's like a track car inside. The touch screen menus look old and clunky, it has connectivity issues with various music and communication devices. After testing the CLA, it was time to move on to the current generation.

But....if they do a new ISF next year, it's going to be off the charts.

And to be honest, i live in the CBD, and it was becoming too well known by cops and sticker lickers. It's loud and drifty. I had my fun :)

Is this Metal archives or something? Sure Linkin Park were never metal and Korn are debatable, but Slipknot have proven over time they are metal for the most part, not anything extreme though.

yeah nah

they portray themselves as metal to non-believers to suit their marketing purposes i guess

their fans see them as this

which they most certainly are not

we see them as this

Dee, about Ataraxie, on this track

about 7:50 we hear what they are capable of but, like Pantheist they fill in the tracks with a lot of pointless meandering.

And they really, really ape Paramaecium and Cryptal Darkness

Slipknot and Korn are nu-metal and definitely metal for mine. Linkin Park are nu-faggy-rock or something like that, never gave a s**t about them that's for sure.

True, but the genre is filled with pointless meandering...some of it more pointless than others I spose. Something about Ataraxie grabbed me from the start..sometimes that just happens.

Mikko Aspa? Think so, also somehow involved video stuff when I remember right. Has a few weird and sick industrial projects as well. And of course is the vocalist of Deathspell Omega...

Yeah pretty sure he was/is a real entrepreneur - has his own record label, manges a couple of bands, produced a few albums (eg Drudkh) and best of all I thought he had/distributed his own porno mag.

There's a couple of Sidewaves I'm interested in. Judas Priest would be the obvious one, but they're not coming to Melbourne. I wouldn't mind going to Exodus & Fear Factory and Ministry & Godflesh, but I'm holding off on buying a ticket in case Mayhem announce a show of their own, cos they come first. Problem is they prob won't do a Sidewave, and the above sell out while I'm waiting.

Friday 17 April: Carcass & Napalm Death (Melb).

**** YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they're part of the national tour?

I don't know much about them except that they started out in Perth and moved to the US where they've been having a lot of success.

I think they did a song or album or something with Barney - Napalm Death.

I don't know much about them either, but there is a connection with Napalm Death. Last time I saw Napalm, Barney made sure to thank, "your friends and mine, Extortion."
