Bulldogs Players That Went To Your School/local footy club etc etc

Played juniors against Honeychurch for years, man he was even tiny for his own age group but still dominated. Remember him kicking 70-80 goals playing on a wing years ago.

From outside bulldogs, played against Tom Boyd who unsurprisingly was extremely arrogant and while 20cm taller than everyone else wasn't as dominant as you would expect. Also played with Dan Mcstay from Brisbane for about 5 years, great bloke.

Amongst Bulldogs players, played tennis at the same club as Tory Dickson (also my boss is best mates with him). As for others, was 2 years above Ollie Wines in Echuca primary school- he was in my brother's class. Literally could not believe it when I saw him play his first game- remembered him from 10 years ago as this tiny little blonde kid who always seemed to have a smile on his face, now he's an absolute gun midfielder and competitive beast playing finals football. Daniel and Eljay Connors also went to Echuca Primary but were a fair bit older than me.

I played juniors at West Footscray. Robert McGhie, Laurie Sandilands, and Marty McDonnell were all recruited from the Roosters, well before my time.

Don Brown , the best junior footballer I have ever seen ( or played with ) played only about 25 games -- wonky knees cut him down I think ?
Did he coach Seddon? Think he did while I was there.

I remember EJ jnr at Sunshine Primary but he may have just been visiting as apparently he went to Altona Primary? But EJ had a shop across the road from our school

John Birt who was captain coach of the ressies in the 70s was a teacher at Essendon Grammar. He used to come on in the last quarter to save the game for the ressies
Scott West went there too, bit after my time

Played against Terry Wheelers son (or one of, not sure how how many there are), he was a gun, I've always wondered if Gia was in that same team also.
Gary Dempsey gave me rucking tips for a couple of seasons

In the same class as Grant Simmons, who played about 40 games in the 1970s.
Leigh Matthews almost killed him in 1975 at Waverley (he stopped breathing, had to be resuscitated). Matthews talked about it in his book...

Doug Hawkins was in year 7 when I was in year 12. Wow - how old am I? :D

I was in the under 19 squad with Don Brown.
Didn't see which way he went, unfortunately :(

Agree with you Harold - as good a player as I've ever seen.
He played half forward alongside Bernie Quinlan for a while. The best HF line in the game at the time.
Injuries got him, sadly. Should've played 200 games.

Caught up with him in the MCC a few years ago - still looks pretty much the same, just a lot richer now (he's a plumber).
One of the funniest guys I've ever known, laugh a minute.

In a weird twist of fate (overly dramatic, I know), his sister was my History tutor at Monash at the time.
Now there was one very attractive lady! I'm sure I learnt a bit of history somewhere along the line that year...

I played with him at Seddon and Uni High , he was an absolute gun.
Of all the great players at Uni high at the time , Crosswell , Balme , Wearmouth and many others he was every bit as good , in my opinion better.

Can't remember his sister , but s**t I would not have liked to deal with his father if you were courting her !

Think he may have gone back and captain coached , but not sure.

Played against a very small EJ jr at junior level , and gave him no chance of making it.
How wrong I was , ended up being a fantastic player.

She was a fair bit older than Don, and very much her own woman who had little to do with her parents by then.
Quite the rad femme - and was married to Peter Corris, who was a well known artist, I think. Parents didn't have much say!

She was actually a very good tutor, and she could talk footy with the best of them - especially Doggies!
She despised Cowboy Neale after he partially blinded Stephen Boyle by poking him in the eye.

When did you play for Seddon? I played for them for a year or two about 1980 - only graced the ressies :D

It's funny, I didn't get the impression that Boyd was arrogant at all.

He definitely marches to the beat of a different drum, but I didn't have an issue with how he carried himself or spoke to people.

He may not be, it was just on the few personal encounters I had with him. He did love a bit of sledging on the field and had the attitude of 'look at me, look how big I am'. As you said it may have just been more of a confidence thing rather than arrogant. He's probably matured now anyway.

Fair enough.

Not disputing what you said or anything, you'd have come into contact with him much more often than I did. Just never got the same impression :)

It must be weird, having played against Honeychurch for so many years, to barrack for the AFL club that he's now at. Didn't see him play too often, but I went to school with a few people who knew him, and they were always describing him as a 'freak'.

He was definitely one of the smallest players on the field even in juniors and definitely was not the quickest (still had some pace) but he was just such as natural footballer. A distinct memory was him have the biggest calves I had ever seen, let alone on a 14/15 year old kid

Early seventies I think , I fear I have a few more K's on the clock than you Fossie.

One more thing on "sheepshead" Brown. He won the FDL B & F in both the U 16's and U18's in the the same year.
Hate to think how many B & Fs he won in his junior days ?

I was there that day and hence my ongoing hatred for Neale and the rest of the thugs at St Kilda at that time.

When I was in year 12, we won our division premiership, then won the Western Zone flag.

That left 4 school teams in Melbourne, and we were supposed to play Uni High in the "prelim", then hopefully advance to the GF. The thing I remember from that time is the, ah, concern we all had with the prospect of playing a side that had Balme, Crosswell, Walls(?) et al in it.

Must say I'm still a little grateful we didn't have to face them. I was the FF, so I might have got Crosswell...

No Walls then Dimma , he was already playing at Carlton.
But he umpired the grand final I played in for Uni High in the Under 16 school championships , the final on
Carlton's ground , then Princess Park.

We won through undefeated. Can't remember who we played in the final.

Wasn't Peter Corris an author? Specialising in crime type novels.
