Collapsing, charging with your head - the AFL are to blame for this crisis

Tonight's game highlighted the ridiculousness of this knee jerk rule, hunt getting pinged and Walters not immediately afterwards.

Another stupid ambiguity added into the umpiring mix. This will cause a lot more frustration than its actually worth

Rubbish, Hunt getting pinned is exactly why the rule is needed. Goes in looking for the free, play on, and you have to dispose of the ball. You had prior opportunity to think about disposing the ball.

Walters shouldn't have been a free, play on and probably holding the ball too.

I think the umpires are going to struggle with this. Their instinct is to see high contact, pay high contact. Having to go through a cognitive process is going to lead to a lot of inconsistencies.

I still think a tackling technique revolution is what will solve these issues. I've already started to see players hold back on tackling for half a second to allow the player to put his head down or go to his knees looking for the free and then then the tackler moves to tackle correctly around the arms/waist. I'm sure this is being taught.

It's a hard rule to enforce, However it stops blatent ducks and will only help weed out people dropping the knee's. It will never solve it, but hopefully it will reverse the trend

Well it did today in the Eagles / Norths game. Umpires are using it as an excuse to ping anything that resembles ducking, which is fine if that's what they said they'd do but that wasn't how it was explained.

Lindsay Thomas tackled to the ground, then lifts his arm to shrug and get high contact gets pinged for ducking. So now the shrug / arm lift gets pinged. Again fine but that's not what was explained mid week.

Players who are running and try and pick up the ball and get tackled side on.....pinged. So now a player can't even try and bend over to pick up the ball if someone is close enough to tackle.

The AFL and the umpires have made this into a farce. Will turn the game into soccer because if the opposition are near by you lose prior opportunity if you bend over to pick it up and get tackled. So what's the option? Kick it along the ground? = soccer.

And then the god dam umps can't even get the obvious ones right. Hurn gets the ball, gets tackled around the hips, tries to break it and fumbles the ball. No free paid and I think he then got a free for being held onto to long after dropping it. North's robbed blind on that occasion.

This rule and the umps are seriously embarrassing themselves and the competition. Now it's chook lotto and no one knows what they can do.

Another year of farce.

Players rewarded for slipping over, players rewarded for dropping their knees.

The rules encouraging very dangerous behaviour.

Stop rewarding this trash!

Alex Rance 2nd qtr Vs Melbourne.

Sees the oncoming player and DUCKS into the tackle.

The umpire rewards it?

Stop rewarding this nonsense!

Looks like there might finally be some change on the way - see attachment, specifically paragraphs three and four. Could not find the article online.

There was some change in how the Crows were umpired on Friday, that's for sure. The umpires were definitely on notice that they needed to dish out some even-uppers in order to placate Don Pyke.

It's just too bad that Pyke seemingly spent the entire week so immersed in his bitching and moaning about free kicks that he forgot to coach his side so the massive free kick disparity, which they had argued was the reason for the loss the previous week, was ultimately useless against Geelong.

Unfortunately Dylan Grimes and Toby McLean were still rewarded.

I see the fear of Selwood burns bright in Hawks fans after last week's football lesson... won't respond to the pathetic trolling on that front, but:

Not just Hawks fans...
If you're not aware of Selwood and Bartel's reputations then you are living in a cave.

That said, all teams do it. Here at West Coast we have Shuey, he's pretty damn good at it. Not sure who officially has the highest stats in this area though across the AFL in 2015 or even so far season 2016.

I hope this remains as a focused on issue - the staging aspect of our game has to go.

And what do you claim Bartel's reputation is, exactly?

In his entire career of 291 games he has a net favourable free kick count of 41. Hardly indicative of systematic staging from a player who for a good chunk of that time was one of the elite midfielders of the competition.

Rhys Mathieson joins the club.

Funny thing is recruiters and even Mark Robinson were talking about his antics before he'd even played a game!

Not only can't Curtis Deboy bounce the ball (although he shouldn't have to bounce the ball) - he also gets sucked in by the antics of Christensen and Mathieson.

Caroline Wilson's article indicated that change was coming - but it is clear that isn't the case. The incompetence continues!

Mathieson stands out even more because of his long hair flailing in the breeze when he throws his head back. He is going to get a lot of free kicks if they keep paying them the way they have been.

Players are winning a ground ball, seeing an opposition player in front of them and charging with their heads down.....
Once more - the AFL's actions have created this environment - as much as I hate Joel Selwood doing it, I hate seeing Murphy try to benefit from it - the AFL have encouraged players to do this.

The next issue is players collapsing at the knees.

How are the opposition meant to apply any pressure if all the player with the ball has to do is collapse and win a free kick?

Once again, the AFL have endorsed this tactic by giving free kicks to players who are deliberately collapsing.

The AFL have created this terrible situation - it is so s**t to watch and see players win the ball and then fall over like they've been shot.

Does any supporter like seeing this?

It is making the game difficult to watch
Two points. When has Selwood "charged with his head down"? As far as I am aware, Never.

Secondly, as for collapsing of the knees, the solution is staring you in the face. And the solution is not to stop awarding the free, but for the tackler to stop being lazy. The tackler has 2 options - go low or high. If he goes high he risks an around the neck. If he goes low, no matter what the player being tackled does, it won't end up being around the neck

Sorry but that is ridiculous. Tackling around the waist without attempting to pin the arms is pointless. You would be better off not tackling, and just trying to corale the player. This is a real problem and it needs intervention.

But the problem is the upper body tackle becomes an around the neck, and you are asking umpires to deliberate on what is 'genuine' around the neck -v- the scenario where the player being tackled has dropped his knees or shrugged his shoulders. It is impossible, and umpires will make mistakes. That's why the AFL has said these tackles will continue to be adjudicated as around the neck
