ST KILDA’S new goal kicking coach Ben Dixon will put every player at the club through a rigorous technical examination over the preseason.

The former Hawthorn sharpshooter turned down advances from Port Adelaide to help fix the Saints’ set shot woes which, in part, cost Alan Richardson’s men a finals berth last season.

The Saints were ranked second last in accuracy (45.5 per cent) in 2016 but have agreed to prioritise the area over summer training to help jump into the eight next tear.

Dixon said players would be made accountable to specific success rates at training to help deal with the mental pressures of goal kicking in game.

Dixon said he was confident the program would deliver results in 2018.

“Definitely we will see some improvement,” Dixon said. “I have got no doubt about that.

“I’m really confident because the program is structured so it will give every single player their own individual focus and a routine that works for them.

“And what is also important is the ability, as a player, to self-assess in-games and in-season so you can revisit and refine it each week.

“That’s at a different level and I’m confident that is where we will get to at the Saints.”

Dixon, who was goal kicking coach at Hawthorn for three seasons, also helped improve Travis Cloke’s accuracy in his stint at the Magpies.

Dixon said there was a misconception that only forwards should work rigorously on their goal kicking.

Tim Membrey was a part of St Kilda’s misfiring forward line.
He said every player on the Saints would be put through the program and was excited by the renewed focus on it at Seaford.

“Every player needs to be confident in their own routine because you never know when the next big opportunity to have a shot is going to present itself,” Dixon said.

“I’m super impressed with Alan Richardson and his team that it has become a priority now.

“I’m excited that they’ve really bought into how important it is, because they have brought all the divisions together, from high performance to coaching, to make it work.”

I’m glad they got a goal kicking coach but they should make him full time especially when you look at our kicking over a long period of time . There are a lot of problems to fix and then it will be an ongoing thing . Also get him looking after guys like Battle and Marshall and the other young players to fix faults before they get promoted to the seniors.

I like the look of Playfair as a forward coach . He has a lot more experience than Hamil did . Also a new voice in the box will help Richo a lot on game day .

I think its more that, with the highly specialised coaching there is simply not that much work to be done.
What would you expect the kicking coach to be doing for 40 hours per week?

I think Dixon taking on the Saints kicking role is genius for him. You would think that natural organic improvement in the stamina of our young brigade means that we improve our kicking. If we make finals on the back of kicking straight the Dixon star will be firmly on the rise. If it stagnates or wanes he can blame it on the game plan or the cattle.

Still means he's head coach at one VFL side and a ruck coach with another (given Im sure his Saints duties stretch to all the ruckmen on our list)

And I don't see anything wrong with that. Every part time coach would surely have another job. As I said Dicko is at crown bet. And I get what you are saying about Sandy versus Fragga but I don't think that is an issue. Someone said Freo and WCE have the same ruck coach.

What's worse is the potential split between rookies at Frankston and other fringe players at sandy
Really really dissapointing

Seriously??? when did this come about?
I think it's got to do with no development league so sandy want to be able to have x amount of players so it sounds as though our guys might be split across Frankston and sandy (I could be wrong though)

splitting the players across sandy and the dolphins is the best thing i've heard for years

hopefully this will be the moment where we start to walk away from sandringham, theyre nothing but trouble. the only way that will change is if we walk away and they go standalone for a season. after that they will realise that maybe the saints and all their players and coaching staff isnt such a bad idea, because they were for free

There's quite a few Saints listed players picking up B&F votes, and others like their ( unfortunately injured ) Captain, who have strong ties with the Saints.
If a few guys like Minch and Curren hadn't been injured, leaving the grunt work to Jack Lonie and Nick O'Kearney, it might have been a pretty successful season.

Yeah, na.

Skrobbers coaching Frankston's VFL side as they make a return to the league.

Fills the expected hole I spoke about a few days ago and may bring us a little closer to have talks with the Dolphins about a potential merge...at least gets our foot in the door.

Why would we want to merge with them when we are moving back to Moorabbin. Complete madness.

What does Moorabbin have to do with anything

Well when we were at seaford which is near Frankston we didn't join them and now we are moving to Moorabbin which is near sandy you hope we join Frankston. If we leave Sandy surely we go on our own. Also easier to manage if we are close to where we play.

Doesn't mean anything. Melbourne's reserves play their games 50k's away from their home base so I'm sure Moorabbin to Frankston is more than feasible.
