If for instance we had pick 14 as our first in an uncompromised draft then if any team below us bid their first rounder ( picks 1-13) then we would have to bid our first pick (14) to secure Jars under the father son rule. If someone who finished above us and had pick 15-18 used their first rounder and using your example of us having pick 30 (probs be 32) then we'd have to use our second round pick to get him.

This is why it is good to be Melbourne when a F/S comes about, as you usually have pick 3...a pick you butcher 11 times out of 10, nobody is going to give up a top 2 pick for your F/S pick, so you can then secure him with at worst, your second rounder ( as in the case of Jay Viney, he was ranked top 10 but not top two so they got two top 10 draft picks in theory, though they traded their first pick for a mini draft pick, so it may be a year or two til we see how much they ruined Hogan)

So tactically speaking , opposition teams could always nominate there first pick for a f/s in order to force that team to use their first rounder on that player?

Yes, there was talk that GWS would do that with Viney but then Viney would have played two years and gone home quicker than Gunston hearing his mum yell out "Jack, it's time for your bath"
