Rumour Future of the club (Bevo, board, assistant coaches, football department)

Yes, it's fair enough to question who we play there. FWIW I think it'll always be an interstate team, especially if North start to rise up the ladder.

Either way we have to accept the Mars deal is in place for the foreseeable future and that the debate has been done to death in recent years.

It'd be better placed in the Ballarat thread or the 2024 fixtures thread ... although it seems this one has morphed into a catchall for all sorts of things!
It’s the off season, doesn’t really matter.
As for the coaches, I’m happy with the coaches thus far. Mathew Egan rôle seemed very important, Leppa would have been ideal but I reckon Egan is a very good get in a needed position within the club structure. Happy with all the other appointments too.
A good goal kicking coach needed.
And if the boys need it, an aboriginal cultural leader, and an out of town, interstate, even a kid from tough background mentoring leader probably needed too. It’s now a very professional sport and if the kids aren’t ready for the requirements, a potential star may not eventuate.
A friend of mine was in Byron just last week and ran into a big group of Collingwood premiership players out at the pub. They had back slappers and girls at them all night and he said they were uber mature about it all.

It was never even a marquee game for us, even when we were fixtured to play in it. Without rotating the home side between us and North, as they do with every single other marquee fixture, it really couldn't have meant much of substance to the club.
It also means almost nothing now that they have a friday night match as well. The whole point was meant to be it's the only thing to do and only match around so everyone will watch it but now I'd rather watch the game at night if I watch one (I'd not want to watch two I can only stomach so many adds a week)

Are you limiting that then to recent key player retirees from Hawthorn (maybe too old now), Geelong and Richmond? That will be a very narrow field?

I don’t know what off-field exposure Johnson had during his time at Sydney other than the rehab room but his years there (2011-2018) while not a “great era” wasn’t bad at all. They certainly backed up year after year and there are learnings even not winning the GF:
  • 2011: finals (week 2)
  • 2012: premiers (he played)
  • 2013: top 4 (prelim)
  • 2014: minor premier (lost GF)
  • 2015: top 4 (straight sets)
  • 2016: minor premier (lost GF)
  • 2017: finals (week 2) after 0-6 start
  • 2018: finals (week 1)
I'm confident that Johnson and Geary both have experiences and skills that will benefit our players. I'm just not confident they have the experience and skill to help create the step change we need to make and win finals next year.

This team got smashed in a grand final. Embarrassed in an elimination final. And couldn't get a win against bottom of the ladder teams to make finals this year. It's on a declining trajectory. And when you look at the teams going past us, our aging midfield that probably peaked two years ago, and a tiring head coach, we could well be headed for the bottom six.

So what I would like to have seen in the development coaches, or at least one of them, is demonstrated and regular success in the last two weeks of September. Players who've played in tough games and led their teams to victory. I'm not sure Johnson counts here (there's a big difference between leading a team on the field and patting guys on the back).

These are some names of recently retired players who I think meet that criteria. Josh Kennedy (Syd). Phil Davis. Tent Cotchin. Joel Sellwood. Ben McEvoy. Shannon Hurn. David Mundy. Shaun Burgoyne. These are the types of leaders and achievers who would give our list an advantage over others and in my view help create the step change we need to bounce back in 2024 and win big finals.

Patience grasshopper.

Second worst close game record shows we aren't that far off the pace. Just need to find the hunger. The team just looked very flat last year

Johnson speaks really really well. Interesting that he already has a relationship with JOD from his involvement at Xavier college.

We seem to have a reasonably balanced coaching panel with some long term experience (Bevo, Egan, Lade & Pratt) with plenty of new blood (Spangher, Geary & Johnson). There's a lot of defenders amongst that group so it will be interesting to see our team defence game plan play out.

I’d loveeeee an extra forward specialist in the mix with the newly added cap room. Not an ounce of forward craft between that group - not that it necessarily means none of them know how to coach forwards of course but it would just be nice to have an extra development coach as a recently retired fwd from a successful forward line, to balance out the group.

A Jack Riewoldt or Eddie betts etc even in a part time role to work with our talls/smalls would be nice. So much talented youth up there.

With Pratt, Egan, Johnson & Geary added tho that’s a heap of defensive nous, we really should improve a lot there.

If our mooted goal-kicking coach ends up being a defender, we could be in trouble though! 😲😆

Johnson really should be great for guiding Buss, JOD & potentially Croft. Think he’ll be an awesome pick up. I want that for the forwards too now Brucey has finished up, as I think he’s been this sort of influence for Naughty whose now passing that onto Marra.

^^

Not taking away from the victim at all, I’m pretty sure actual damages are awarded by judges independent or whatever number a jury throws out. I suspect there would be insurance coverage also.

One thing I've noticed with Johnson and Egan specifically, these guys had their careers cut short through injury.

Perhaps this is a factor in why we picked them up. If anyone can give a kick up the behind of a group wasting their talent, it's blokes able to provide some real life perspective.
