Goal kicking is a lot like a golf swing. Everybody does it slightly differently even the best in the world. There is no one size that fits all.

Yet what they all do is have a single repeatable motion. (Tory Dickson, Barry Hall). Compare that to our current day. Only Cody Weightman I would argue tries to do a repeatable motion. The others look lost at sea.

It’s also like golf because it’s the only time in football where the player has time. That time can be helpful for some because they they know they can’t be tackled and can focus better, but for others the conscious mind kicks in too hard and the pressure of the moment, crowd, tv enters their mind, and if just one muscle stiffens up the whole routine which is perfect at training just delay’s the ball drop or or run up etc. and we then know what happens.

Also arguably it can be advanteous to score points at certain points of the game as it allows us to fully demoralise a team with an impenetrable defence and chew up time as opposed to going back to the centre where their midfield may win the next clearance

great having a huge Bulldogs ‘name’ like Johnno back in the fold. He sees the game so clearly and understands the latest trends with tactics etc… Easily in the top 2 or 3 expert commentators on Fox…

He's not an assistant though, and his goal kicking role is part-time(?), so doubt he has any input into game day planning or execution.
 
When Juh was living with Fev, he spent time with him re: goalkicking. He was deadly straight back then. Just saying
So it's settled. Sack Johnno and bring in Fev.

It's both. If they don't have a consistent action and repeatable motion under pressure, it's at least partly mechanical.

Sometimes you know Naughts is missing a 30 metre kick to the left before the ball leaves his foot.

Reports here were that we were missing easy ones in match sim. Not all of them were set shots though.

Missing a goal on the run is something I can live with. Missing a lot of set shots from 25-45m out on no difficult angle is a different matter. We should be nailing the vast majority of them.

As you are aware, we’ve been working to identify improvements that will underpin our great Club’s future success.

In November last year, the Club appointed experienced football administrator Peter Jackson to work with Club CEO Ameet Bains in reviewing various aspects of the Club’s administration, operation and integration of the AFL men’s program, the program’s overarching environment and how the Club can best maximise the opportunities of on-field success.

The six-week review involved discussions with around 50 people within the Club and other senior football people within the AFL industry.

Pleasingly, the review highlighted many positive elements of our AFL men’s program, including the benefits of the transformational new facility, along with the culture that underpins our department.

The review also reaffirmed the positive impact of off-season changes to the program – which included welcoming eight new players and close to 30% new full-time staff – and the strong contribution our new personnel are already making.

Ultimately, the review highlighted that we have what we need to set us up for success, but it’s a matter of having things in the right place and leveraged in the most effective way.

Recommendations focused on building success in four key areas:

  1. Structure of the Department;
  2. Culture and environment;
  3. Coaching roles and responsibilities;
  4. Development and education.

Based on the report’s findings, the Club will undertake the following:


  1. Create a new role of General Manager Football Operations that will have operational responsibility for the performance aspects of the men’s program including coaching, physical performance, player welfare and football operations;
  2. Matt Egan has been promoted to this new role. Matt will continue to report directly to Chris Grant, the Club’s Executive Director of Football, as will the list management, medical and football administration functions;
  3. Chris maintains his role as head of the Department, assuming a more elevated focus on executive leadership, strategy and innovation, with high-level management and oversight of both our men’s and women’s programs;
  4. Appoint a GM of Women’s Football to have operational responsibility of the women’s program. This recruitment process is already under way;
  5. Implement a clearer demarcation of reporting lines, roles and responsibilities to ensure individuals are better placed to focus on their specific areas, particularly within the coaching structure;
  6. Assume a renewed focus on both player and staff development and education;
  7. Implement a suite of initiatives to enhance connection and collaboration across the Department and Club more broadly.

We thank Peter Jackson for his valuable assistance and sharing of insight and counsel to the benefit of our Club overall.

We now look forward to completing pre-season training ahead of what we hope to be an exciting 2024 season.

Interesting stuff, I wonder what actual differences there are between this new role and the one Egan was recruited for? Sounds pretty similar doesn’t it just with a different title.

Sounds like we desperately need a GM for the AFLW, the wheels have fallen off in a big way.

Would Bec Goddard be any good in this role?

We had such high calibre people previously how did it all go to shite.

Yeah I’d be surprised if anything happens now though with the season just around the corner basically.

I feel like his old roles responsibilities have just been absorbed into a greater role.

If you put both this new role and when he was hired together:

New - role of General Manager Football Operations that will have operational responsibility for the performance aspects of the men’s program including coaching, physical performance, player welfare and football operations;

Old -
Matthew Egan has been appointed as the Club’s Coaching and Performance Manager. This newly created position will closely support Senior Coach Luke Beveridge in a coaching capacity and will oversee the development and growth of the entire coaching team.

The position will also see Matthew perform a range of administrative functions in supporting Executive Director of Football, Chris Grant, on broader football program activities.

Of course without knowing the full rundown of responsibilities in both roles it seems the new (new) role has just absorbed the old and been expanded, unless the plan is to now get someone in under him too?

Basically my reading of the situation from the outside looking in, Grants involvement with the football department in a hands on sense has been wound back, Bevos long reaching stranglehold over everything outside his realm has been wound back, Egan is the new man in the middle of all of that.

None of that is new from the review, and is basically what we’ve been sold the whole time but now it’s been officially ticked off from an external source so everyone can cover their asses? So yeah tokenistic at best seems like a fair way to put it 😂
 
They have left out the juicy bits, as you do for a public statement like this. It's easy to put lipstick on the recommendations (which we haven't seen) and easier still on the agreed actions.

What I'd love to read (and we almost certainly never will) are the report's findings.

Still I think we all have a rough idea what they would include.
I also understand and agree with the multiple reasons why the club wouldn't want to air the dirty washing.
