Something for Suns supporters to hopefully look forward to next year. Brad Scheer (PBC :thumbsu:) bottom ager 189cm 80kg mid according to the graphic. Great size already, good hands, booming kick

I know this has been asked before but has Scheer spent enough years in Queensland to be eligible as an academy pick?

Anyone know when the afl academy gets announced for the 16s?
Academy Squads announced today - unfortunately no Suns Academy kids selected - only 2 from Queensland in Level 1 - both from Lions.
Think it's a bit rank given Queensland won the 16's and NSW /ACT have 5 selected. Thought Crossley and Dawson were a chance given their carnival performances......

FFS!!
Brisbane have Keays Hipwood Alison now this kid..

What zone did the Suns get.. The Glitter Strip

Although the Suns' zone is considerably bigger in land, Brisbane's zone smashes the Gold Coast's in terms of population. You've got Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast alone that nearly equate to 2.5 million people. That doesn't include areas like Ipswich, Bundaberg or a portion of Logan that are also a part of the Lions' zone. The Gold Coast has three major cities to zone talent from which are the Gold Coast (approx 600k), Townsville (180k) and Cairns (150k). You also have to take into account the fact that moving from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane is nowhere near as daunting as moving from Cairns/Townsville to the Gold Coast. Unfortunately, there are a few things going against the Suns when it comes to their academy but a lack of population is probably the biggest issue. The Gold Coast's zone is the smallest of all the northern zones when it comes to population.

Someone please explain to me how that works??

For anyone interested, here is the list of Queenslanders for the AFL State Combine:
Dyson Budarick – Labrador
Wylie Buzza – Redlands
Gareth Hunt – Aspley
Paul Hunter – Redlands
Jesse Joyce – Palm Beach Currumbin
Max Spencer – Palm Beach Currumbin
Matt Uebergang – Redland
Josh Wagner – Aspley
Nick Weller – Brisbane Lions Academy

Four players from the AFL State Combine list will be upgraded to the NAB AFL Draft Combine in the next week. Players who have tested well in the State Combine have been drafted before, so looks like there's still a chance for Budarick.

Also, in not so good news, it looks as though Curtis Marsden has been cut from the NAB AFL Academy. He was a member of the academy this year in level one squad, but has been cut and won't make the level two squad for next year. Brad Scheer and Jack Bowes retain their spots for next year after being upgraded from level one to level two. No-one new from Queensland has been added to the list (for both levels).

Not quite right - Queensland has two new level one reps - Ballendon and Clayton from Lions Academy.

The big academy anomaly is the GWS with the riverina area north of the Murray, especially Albury and Wagga. (Cal Twomey has been on this bandwagon for a while).

Some gun AFL players have come from the Riverina and AFL is more than big enough to attract youngsters. I went to High School in Albury and Hockey was the 2nd biggest sport behind aussie rules. No need for an academy system there. Not likely to attract athletes that would have chosen another sport without the academy, especially those out of the Albury area. GWS will get good players out of the riverina more often than not.
