Really shocked at what has happened with Stevens. Was neighbour with my sister's best friend for quite some time. Met him a few times and he seemed like a great bloke. From all other reports he was really friendly too.

Had some issues dealing with an early retirement maybe? Still no excuse of course.

The times I met him he was a pleasure to deal with but that's the thing people can hide this side to them from public.

Lock him up

Lots of seemingly good blokes have IVO's against them for Family Violence - or end up in Behaviour Change Groups mandated by court order. The thing is, mostly there is a decent man within. Over time, with the wrong type of upbringing, crap role models, no healthy mentoring and poor decision making regarding the use of power and control, too many blokes drift from any positive values or life principles they may have had. Violence is a choice.

From the sounds of it, Nick Stevens has become a heavy drinker and drug user, that has to play a major factor as well. My Mam told me my old man used to be a decent, charming man, but once he hit the booze, he became an abusive monster.

I hope he receives serious jail time, but I also hope Nick gets the opportunity to sober up in prison, get detoxed and have an opportunity for rehabilitation. So many good people/men have had their lives ruined by addiction :(

Sorry, DVB. I've never seen a stubby of VB with "contains 20% Physical Violence" on the label. The thoughts, emotions and sense of entitlement already exist within a person well before any inhibition-minimizing or consequence-clouding alcohol is consumed.

True, but on the other hand, a lot of those negative, destructive feelings these abusive men have, probably come from a position of deep-seated emotional pain, and yes, it is their fault and responsibility that instead of seeking healthy mechanisms to deal with their issues, they turn to the bottle, and naturally it makes everything a lot worse.

I should add a lot of women are unfairly criticized for staying with violent/abusive spouses, I don't think us men actually have any idea of what courage these women have to face everyday, and it is extremely difficult for them to walk away from such a nightmare of a living situation.

Sadly, there are some knuckle draggers defending Nick Stevens on twitter and making up insulting accusations that his partner is a liar. I despair of those misogynistic Neanderthals. :(

Seriously accurate, quality post. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

People who defend abusive men or who try to excuse their actions make me feel physically sick (not you DVB but the abuse apologists). Unless you've survived domestic abuse you have no ******* idea what it's like.

Exactly right. I especially get frustrated when celebrity male abusers like Matthew Newton seem to get a lot of sympathy because they suffer from depression and/other mental health issues... That's insulting to female victims of spousal abuse and most people with genuine mental health issues..

Onto more pleasant topics, what is the best station to listen to (on the wireless) this season at games. Mark Maclure drove me away from the ABC a few years ago, with his constant negativity of Carlton.

3AW intrigues me right now, especially since they got rid of that 1950s relic Brian Taylor, and bought in Bomber Thompson, one of footy's most fascinating characters.

Personally I always felt SEN have the best calling team, but annoyingly, they rarely cover Carlton games in Melbourne.

Triple M is definitely a no-go for me, Garry Lyon, Brayshaw and now the return of The Bristle... Ugh.

Looking like I'm a 3AW man for 2015 :)

AW callers can't open their mouths without mentioning a sponsor. Crosses to another game are sponsored, crosses down to the boundary line are sponsored, goals are sponsored, marks are sponsored, almost marks are sponsored, the scoreboard is sponsored, specialist commentators are sponsored, the entire call is sponsored, the season is sponsored etc. I can put up with Morphett's dullness and Maclure's nihilistic negativity if it means I avoid the rampant commercialism that has already eaten so much of the game's community spirit.
