2013 All Named Top 10 – Last 12 months

Points are recorded from the best player lists from six different media sources – the AFL website, The Age (Fairfax), Sportal, Herald Sun (News Limited), Dream Team and Super Coach – and then recalculated to produce a score out of 500. Should any of these websites be missing best players, the calculation will be altered accordingly. If named best by each media outlet, a player can potentially score 500 points per week. It doesn’t take results into account.

No no no, this top 10 is a joke.

Here's why you're wrong....

Heppell was pretty handy as well, with 36 possessions, 9 marks, 2 goals 2 behinds, 4 tackles, a hit out and 6 inside 50s.

Watson was named as best on ground by the Herald Sun and also scored the most Super Coach points, but he was named second best to Heppell by all of afl.com.au, The Age, Sportal and was second in Dream Team points.
When I give 10 points to best, counting down, this gave Heppell 58/60 to Watson's 56/60. Converting that to a score out of 60 to a score out of 500, and that is how Heppell scored 483 and Watson 467.

I hope this answers Duritz's question as well.

I assume that the basis for this uses Monte Carlo analysis to take key statistics that are mapped against awarded Brownlow Medal votes, then converted into a score 0-500 based on an aggregation of the most likely outcomes.

This would make sense because the correlation between midfielder statistics and Brownlow votes is quite high, unless you get major outliers like 7 goal+ forwards. So it matches the inherent bias that umpires have to midfielders.

A couple of questions:

Do you make allowances for consistent vote-getters? (ie G Ablett getting 30 possessions is more likely to get votes than Matthew Broadbent getting 30 possessions)

Do you make allowances for key players in the final quarter of close games (aka Supercoach)?

It's good to see Spitta finally get some acknowledgement.

He has been sensational so far this year.

There's no analysing of statistics at all mate. It's simply taking the best players as named by five media sources, along with the Dream Team and Super Coach points, and awarding them points based on that. The table I use for the first two lists can be seen in earlier posts. As for the third list, the best player as named for each club in any one media source gets a score of 100, with 90 for second and so on. Once the seven sources are taken into account, the total score is averaged from a score out of 700 to a score out of 500. Clear as mud?

No allowances made, it's solely on the published names.
Oh, and for the second and third lists, the player defends half the points he won in the corresponding round the previous year. The other half survives for two years.
