Player takes possession of the ball

- is immediately stripped of the ball = play on
- is stripped of the ball after choosing not to immediately dispose of it = free kick against

- is immediately wrapped up with ball in his hands
*was attempting to dispose of the ball immediately = ball up
* had no opportunity to even try to dispose of the ball = ball up
*Was not attempting to dispose of the ball = free kick against

Thus Monfries took possession and did not immediately attempt to kick it
Was tackled and stripped of the ball = free kick

Totally agree with your interpretation of this rule. Too many times players are given too much latitude when they first take possession and then too little if they happen to break a tackle and then get pinged even though they are not truly caught holding the ball in the subsequent tackle.

We need a universal ruling on what constitutes a tackle
All other sports have it

Is it when a players momentum has stopped, when their knee/leg hits the ground, when they've spun around?

Just make it black and white, and watch how quickly the incorrect disposal rules are fixed?
