Jared Rivers was on SEN prior to the Essendon vs. Geelong game tonight. I highly recommend that all Dees supporters have a listen, and I will endeavor to post a link as soon as it is loaded up. Jared explained how cut up both he and Moloney were after being removed from the leadership group by Neeld upon his entry into the club. He really felt disenchanted that as an older player he was so easily disregarded in place of youth, especially since neither was given an opportunity to prove themselves. He also suggested that Moloney was a great leader at the club, and did a lot of work with the younger players outside training. I don't want to paraphrase any more, but please have a listen if you want a real insight into the club from the perspective of a highly respected senior player. Mark Neeld's decision to demote senior players like Moloney and Rivers was as bad as Bailey's decision to move on Junior.

Interested to hear it, as I'm torn as to how I've felt about them moving on. On one hand I didn't like it as they were great servants of the club, but on the other hand I don't believe they were ever great leaders and were perceived as such by the footballing community.

It is a tough one. From one point of view it can be considered sour grapes but on the other hand they now have no reason to hold back or protect the club.

Sounds as if it was done in a respectful way, without holding back but we'd have to get OP to comment on that.

I did hear the end of it actually, although it sounds like I missed the juicy part.

Feel sorry for Rivers, he bore the brunt of our terrible period and was shafted at the end of it (file under McDonald, James).

I certainly wish him success at Geelong. No wonder we struggle to gain respect from the football community, some of our player (and ex-player) management over the last few years has rivalled our on-field performance for shodiness.

Yep, stuck by the club in its darkest hours, only to be tossed away without a thought for unproven talent. Then to add salt in the wounds of the supporters they are replaced with terrible shit (Gillies, Rodan ext)

He was hardly 'tossed away' without a thought. From the leadership group, yes, but I'm 100% certain that there was a contract on the table for him from the club, but he chose to go to Geelong. I don't blame him for going but he wasn't exactly tossed aside.

I hope he gets fit soon and remains fit. Will certainly get to play finals and if the Cats current form is anything to go by, he may even win a flag...

Always liked Rivers and Neeld stated he was a required player but of course we don't know how it plays out behind closed doors.

Neeld had to take control of the group though and that involved shaping his own leadership group - fair enough tbh he's the one who will live or die by it.

In any case in a couple of years time nobody will even remember.

Not in a contractual sense, however in a leadership sense he was, that would have to hurt. Not so much if was replaced by experienced quality, but to be replaced by junior inexperienced kids it would

Neeld didn't like what he saw and he replaced them. Tough shit.

This was the leadership group that has been alleged to have had an onfield protest to remove our CEO that resulted in a 186 point loss to Geelong and that decided to cancel a time trial because they didn't feel like doing it or whatever the BS excuse was.

As far as I'm concerned the tail has wagged the dog for too long at Melbourne and I'm hoping Neeld has put a stop to that for good.

I will give Rivers credit for not dropping his head and being a whiny little bitch like Moloney.

Exactly ^^

They had a chance to prove themselves in the years prior. I've respect for Rivers because playing in defense the MFC isn't a gig I would wish on anyone.

But he is sounding a lot like Moloney.

= offended.

Edit: it's also a sad state of affairs if offended gets word filtered. Lift your game big footy.

And how has it worked out so far?

We are a 10 goal worse team now under Neeld

We are slowly starting to see a group wide attitude shift away from the whiney, self centred attitude of the previous core group (exemplified by Rivers' comments), to a team oriented, hard working attitude.

It's a slow process.

So effectively we are going from an inconsistent team to a consistently shit team that has only beaten 1 non-expansion club in a year and a 1/4?

A team that averages 100 fewer possessions a game, is worse defensively than under Bailey (defence was Neelds seller) and has seen all of our young promising talent go backwards at an alarming rate?
FWIW all of the departed players last year left with dignity IMO. Neeld won't be there in 18 months time either, but it doesn't matter as he has sent the club back 5 years

I'm unsure why you quoted my post sivart, you're not responding to me are you? Because if you are I don't understand...

Yeah but the dog wags the tail.

That's the dream.

**** winning games of footy and improving every year!
We will improve mate, we will win games and we will begin to win more. You can't just flick a switch, you've got to build it up amongst the group, amongst a group who are all pushing in the same direction and who are all working for the coach and for each other.

It doesn't look like it at the moment, but I think by the end of 2013 we'll be able to say that we improved from 2012.

Your point was we are slowly improving as a team, my point is why have regressed to a worse level than 2007-2008

My point was that we are slowly improving the attitude of the team (a necessary and slow process), and that improved results should follow. You are right that we haven't seen anything much in that regard yet. But we've seen glimpses.

Bailey got almost four seasons to get his game plan in place and he failed. I feel like a lot of Melbourne supporters are starting to view Bailey's reign through rose tinted glasses of late. The man was a complete and utter failure as a coach.

I honest to God think we need to give Neeld the time to finish implementing his plan and structures. At least until the end of his contract. We can't be cutting and changing coaches every few years like say Richmond have in the past.

As much as it hurts, we're rebuilding the rebuild. I feel like I've seen improvement in the team in recent weeks. Q4 against GWS and Q2 against Carlton have shown what we are capable of. We just have to learn to string it together for four quarters. I know it isn't much to hang our collective hats on as supporters but I feel like we are starting to see the signs.

Bailey was a failure, no doubt. He stocked have risen purely on the basis that Neelds' reign to date has been the worst of any coach of any club I can remember. Take out the expansion teams and we have won 1 match out of a possible 24.
Bailey seemed to at least develop youngsters, we could see improvement in Frawley, Garland, Jamar, Trengove ext. Where as other than Jones I cannot see any player that has improved under Neeld.

To top it off, I have become sick of hearing the same shit after every loss. We are training well (who cares), we were competitive for parts of the game (despite being smashed in every key indicator) ext.

And spare me the bullshit of 'I have seen improvement in a quarter here and there'. Under Bailey we pushed top teams on occasions and smashed poor teams. Under Neeld we get thumped by top teams and smashed by poor teams

My hope is that if Neeld has NFI how to coach that at least the 'behind the scenes' work he's done will pay off for whoever's next into the ejector seat.

Same here. Although I really want to see how the season pants out, I think there has been glimpses. That's not to undersell how important today is!
