Jumper clash fails

North have nailed it with this strip. Looks really good. Should certainly have something all blue as a clash strip. And contrasts perfectly with their home strip in all white, like Geelong.

Something really classy about the all-royal blue. A lot of soccer clubs have it.

They fixed up the nightmare of no blue clash strip last year with the all royal blue with a white kangaroo. It looked good!

So we got this in 2023 which worked fine:

This is their actual clash jumper.

How it is approved is anybody’s guess.

That is supposedly an effective clash strip for this:

I think it was the same last year where the all blue jumper they wore against Geelong wasn't their official away/clash jumper. So I assume they will turn up with something similar to last year in 2 weeks time.

This Adelaide away jumper is an absolute mess. All red on the back but mainly dark in the front.

Teams should be made to have the front and back similar colours. It looks like 3 teams are playing with Adelaide red from the back but navy and yellow from the front.

You can work out who is who but it's so much less clear than it should be.

The shorts are an issue. If they were in red shorts it would be much better as it would add more red to the front.

Stupid bloody white shorts.

It's classed as an away jumper, not clash.

Just need to roll out a home strip of blue on white, away the bounding roo and a clash of white on all blue.

Pretty Simple.
It works for collingwood.
White stripes on black, black shorts, black socks.

Black stripes on white, white shorts, white socks.

Simple stuff.

Agreed. It's trying to be too artistic. If a jumper must have an animal emblem on it, keep it small, neat & simple like Brisbane's Lion or West Coast's eagle.

Wearing white shorts when there are already 3 colours in the jumper none of which are white is crazy. Just guarantees you clash with everyone.

Agreed with that jumper red shorts is the only smart option and would've probably made it fine.

The earliest surviving footage of VFL football: the 1909 Grand Final.

Carlton in their navy strip, South in white. Yet South is the home team, so wear black pants… with Carlton in white pants!

We shouldn’t expect a solution to this too soon.

In seriousness though, black-home, white-away shorts didn't exist in 1909. The VFL rule was introduced in 1924. In 1909, Carlton wore white shorts with their uniform, South wore black.

Previous to 1924, shorts colour (either black or white) in the uniform was at the discretion of the club. It was supposedly a status symbol in those days as white was more expensive than black. Most clubs wore black. Carlton, Essendon, & Geelong wore white. Interestingly, Melbourne wore black.

I know I’m just repeating what’s already been said but every clubs jumper can be reversed to negate a clash. Even better when clubs have more than 2 colours to choose from. Heritage, GR, Clash jumpers can also be used to eliminate clashes. St Kilda could’ve worn the Candystripes today against Essendon for example

Longer term, still don’t think this does the job for Melbourne as a clash strip. Think they should have a red and/or white strip.

Agreed. They wore one last year which was an indigenous one I think, which was closer to a Man City blue than a Chelsea blue, which did the trick. But I dont think the Royal blue is quite light enough, and doesn't go far enough in games against Essendon. Only a 6.5 on the Contrastometer for me tonight.

What's with the purple and green in the North jumper? Never been part of their history, has it?
Green and purple are the colours of the Royal Children's Hospital

Another game tonight where white shorts have made it worse.

Melbourne should be in royal blue or red shorts.

The white just clashes with Port’s back.

The only reason it's in their stable is because they wore it in the 70s and 80s for colour TV.

Port's shirt causes issues because it contrasts with itself. It's s**t when they play any team with a considerable amount of black, navy and white which is over half the comp, particularly when there is little in the way of a distinguishing colour between the two teams.

Sydney's shirt does the same, but has fewer issues because red, and white paired with red, isn't as common in the League.

Round 3

Bris v Coll ✅

North v Carl ✅

Freo v Adel ❌
Typically dumb AFL - a large part of the Crows jumper was navy (the opponent is dark purple), and they introduced white shorts when white is one of Freo’s colours (albeit minor). Stupid, probably would’ve been fixed with just a switch to red shorts to really set them apart. Or go a full white kit which would be much more stark.

Ess v St K ✅

Port v Melb ❌
People complain about the Port number panel and while it’s not ideal, you can still produce a decent combination. Melbourne in white shorts with a blue and red jumper is just dumb. Even matching blue shorts would’ve been better. Ideally, the Dees need to be in an all-white or all-red kit for this match.

Dogs v Eagles ✅

Rich v Syd ✅

Haw v Geel ✅

6/8, not bad for the AFL’s ridiculously low standards, but still letting themselves down.
