I promised that if the Packers lost, I would come back and put my head on a pike for you all to jape & jeer at. So here it is. Jape and Jeer at will, you b#stards!!! :D

Mooster, I must admit I was surprised at your bold tip in this game, but oh well I'll join in the japing and jeering anyways.

I do have a question for you. Can you, or TT for that matter, give me a rundown on KC's year. Do we have a bright future or are we destined to mediocrity for another couple of seasons? Ever since I became so heavily involved in hockey, my knowledge of the Chiefs has wained somewhat and I would appreciate any help on this matter which deserves to regain its rightful place in the Santos 'order of merit'.

Santos, how ironic. I've been so busy over the past year trying to learn AFL and following the NFL that I haven't had time to keep up with hockey!

I don't know if you had the opportunity to catch many (or any) Chiefs games this year, but we played really well. Do you remember back when we had Bono, and had the 13-3 season? Looks good on paper, but some of those games that year, we should have lost.

This year, our record was horrible on paper, but we should have won a few of those that went into the "L" category. We racked up a hell of a lot of offensive yardage, and was able to push nearly every defense back on their heels. That doesn't help much when you turn the ball over in the red zone. Yards without points is like...hmmm I cannot think of a non-pornographic analogy. I've been working too much this week.

In my view, this wasn't a rebuilding issue, but rather a birthing pain issue. New coach & staff, new offensive phillosophy, shallow bench. It didn't help that our shallow bench was on the field in the form of our Defensive Tackles (which allowed our opponents to rip long runs at inconvenient moments) and shallow at receiver (double team Tony and force the shallow wide-outs to perform). Obviously Green made some ridiculous decisions as well.

Another problem was game planning. No plan survives contact with the enemy. The Chiefs began the season with idea of throwing. Patton tells us that you cannot force situations fit your plan, you have to plan to fit the situation. All the while we were trying to thread the air game, we had Priest Holmes in the back field with his thumb up his behind. Holmes didn't start getting a lot of touches until almost mid-season and he still became the NFL leading rusher. That won't be forgotten next year. You have to go with what works, not with what you wish worked. If all you can do is run, then run. Lesson two: Running is always the best thing to do - in KC.

We have to keep Gonzales and acquire another quality receiver (on top of getting Cat Morris back and keeping Snoop). We need two good Defensive Tackles (as well as putting John Browning back in the line-up). Having a kicker who can put it in the end zone on occasion would be nice. An 80 yard field is much easier to defend than a sixty yard field.

The coaching will have sunk in more by next season. I noticed that the offensive line had consistency problems with their blocking schemes. New offense for them, and I don't blame them. The special team defense needs to be vastely improved (the 80 yard field isn't entirely the fault of the kicker).

They also need to get the f#ck rid of those silly red away game pants. Chiefs wear all white on enemy territory.

I'm optimistic for next year. I spent the 2001 off season preaching to TT that the NFL pre-season was meaningless compared to the AFL pre-season. Then, I myself got a false sense of security during the 2001 Chiefs pre-season. Go figure.

In my final analysis, and for the above reasons, we weren't mediocre on the field, but not consistent for four quarters. This led to mediocrity for our record and put the Chiefs (like the rest of us) on the couch during the play-offs. We were a much better team than what showed on scoreboads and in the "ladder." Of course, the scoreboard and ladder is all the matters at the end of the day and end of the season. Next season we will have improved. I won't be able to guess how much until after the draft/trade, and perhaps not until after Spring camp. I will keep you posted.

Do keep in mind that I have a tendency to be boldly optimistic as it pertains to the Chiefs and Packers. I don't think it shows though. :D Quite a disorganized ramble, this post. If you need anything expounded upon, or clarified - do ask. Peace,

Mooster

Thanks Mooster. I didn't get to see one Chiefs game this year as our cable provider is Fox, so we basically get only NFC teams which pisses me off, but what can I do about it?...........not bloody much.
I certainly do remember that year with Bono (probably would have been 15-1 if the Edge had played too:rolleyes: ) and I certainly remember Elvis GrrrBac throwing more interceptions than I've had hot dinners. I think it was around Grrrbac's time that I started paying less attention to the Chiefs.
Thanks for the summary and it made perfect sense to me and gives me more hope that we may become a powerhouse again soon. I would be appreciative if you could keep me up to date with any free agent signings etc.

cheers. I owe ya one.

Hey, I like those! Remind me of the Huskers. Besides, they were wearing those back in the 60s and 70s when they were winning the AFL.

(That's American Football League, for any smartarses out there) :D
