I’m really excited for this. Afternoon sessions are on at great times, pity about the finals but can’t have it all.

Particularly interested in seeing Noah Lyles. Love watching him run, love the confidence. 200m seems like a sure thing, 100m no but will be interesting to see what he can produce.

And some other athletes I’m keen to see: Femke Bol, Mondo, Hodgkinson, Warholm, though so disappointed McLaughlin is out.

Time difference with Budapest is 8 hrs AEST, 7.5 hrs ACST and 6 hrs AWST.

SBS Viceland (Ch 31)coverage starts at 4.40pm EST / 4.10 and 2.40 today for the morning session and the evening session starts at 2.50am/2.20/12.50 ten minutes before men's 1500m heats but after the opening ceremony.

I assume we are getting the World Athletics feed with commentator Tim Hutchings ex distance runner and Rob Walker does the calling. They usually add 2 or 3 others for certain events.

It's rather random that T&FN have listed her in the top ten. They often discount Aussies with more form than someone like Abbey.

1500m is her better event but she isn't considered there. I'm curious to see if she will even start in the 800.

Nations that did better than Oz on both tables USA, JAM, KEN 46, ETH 40, CHN 53 and also on placings table GBR, CAN 59, POL 45 and NED were =9th with Oz with 36 athletes. JAP finished 11th and GER 14th


2023 66 - 8th biggest team - there might be 1 or 2 in or out for each team as these number were accurate as at 10th August

- USA 138, GER 78, ITA 78 (up from 60), FRA 78 (up from 45 to get ready for Paris next year) JAP 76, JAM 68, POL 67 (up from 45). Hungary has gone from 15 in Eugene to 63 athletes at home, GBR is down from 81 to 55, CHN down from 53 to 41, KEN up to 52, ETH steady at 42 and CAN down a few to 55.

Brazil has been the steady improver since they were announced to host the 2016 Olympics after the 2009 world champs.
2009 -30, 2011 - 26, 2013 - 32, 2015 - 53, 2017 -39, 2019 - 40, 2022 - 58, 2023 - 56.

** No Russian team since 2017 champs due to state sponsored doping ban ( plus Ukraine war for this year's and last year's)

Attended the World Junior Champs in Sydney in 1996.

Jane's younger sister - Natalie - was competing in the walk.

She was in 3rd or 4th place with just 100m to go but contesting with another athlete. The opponent started to almost run. Natalie responded and I stood up in the stands yelling 'no Natalie - don't do it'.

Yes - she got disqualified.

Even more heart-breaking four years later when much the same happened to Jane.

Watching the package from day 1 of Eugene to fill in the 2hr delay from Budapest, I am reminded of how bad / useless Gail Divers is as an athletics special commentator. As soon as the soccer started turned it over to avoid having ro listen to her.

Great that World Athletics has scrapped time qualifying for heats and semi finals races greater than 800m.

The middle and longer distances are more about tactics than times and the 1st heat always is at a disadvantage to the 2nd and 3rd heats, and same if there is 2 or 3 semi finals.

In the 20Km Walk Aussie Declan Tingay finished 8th and got Oz its first point for the placings table. He was in the leading pack of about 10 at the 11 km then slowly lost a few seconds behind the leaders every km. Was 58 seconds behind Spanish winner and 43 behind the Brazilian bronze medallist.

World Athletics ranked him 9th, he had the 5th fastest time of the year and T&F News ranked him 6th so he delivered on expectations.The winner did a world leading time for 2023, the next 5 did national records and next 3 inc Tingay, did PBs. can't ask more than that.


The 1500m heats for women all 3 Aussies qualified for the semis. Top 6 of each of 4 heats advanced now that time qualifiers have been removed for events longer than 800m. Abby Caldwell looked comfortable finishing 6th, there was a gap to 7th. It was the slowest heat. Linden Hall front ran for most of the event to stay out of trouble and struggled a bit but finished 6th. That heat was 2 seconds faster than the previous 2 heats. Jessica Hull looked very good finishing 2nd in her heat.

Brooke Buschkuehl, struggled to jump near her season best. Her first jump of 6.55m had her placed 9th, 12 qualify, but she didn't improve and finished 17th. Her SB of 6.77m was the 21st best jump of the year and would have got her into the finals as 5th longest. A lot of ju,pers strugglrd after the vevent was delayed by over an hour. Samantha Dale struggled jumped 6.35m has a SB and PB of 6.71m and finished 29th which was in line with her world ranking of 25.

I enjoyed watching the men's hammer throw qualification - bit of group A and then all of group B, when there were no other events on. There is something entertaining about watching tall boofy blokes who are a ball of muscle and rotate fast, yell and scream and throw the 16 pound hammer 70-80m, and its just as entertaining watching them * up and launch it into the nets.

The mixed relays were their usual good value. Yanks should win but a few euro countries will push them. Olympic champs Poland appealed as I think a German runner fell over at the change and impeded them and they have been installed as the 9th team for the evening session final. They will push the yanks.

The women's 10,000m on Day 1 was pretty dramatic. Ethiopia swept with gold, silver and bronze. Olympic gold medalist Sifan Hassan finished 11th after falling when she was leading with 20 metres to go. (Hassan had also run her 1500m heat a few hours earlier).
