What do we think so far? The GPS on the back makes it hard to read at times but for the most part they are readable with the close up camera. Obviously you can't read the names from the main camera but we knew that coming into it. Overall I don't think it hurts the game so introducing it wouldn't diminish jumpers in my opinion. I'm going with good for the game from a marketing and exposure perspective. What do you think?

Good for merchandising. They should make it permanent. But just increase the size of the font imo.

Pretty much the way I look at it. I don't really see a genuine reason to complain about it.

Matthews idea of having the name bigger and the number smaller is absolutely terrible.

Good thing we're not paying attention to the players backs 90% of the time.

It is a stupid move to further commercialise the game for this reason i can't and will not support it. If you don't know the players names from their numbers alone then you need to follow the game more

going against the flow - but i like it. i'm relatively new to the afl, try to watch other teams' games as a neutral, and it good to be able to identify players from other teams when i do.

I don't mind it, it's not doing any harm to the jumper designs and if it keeps the kids happy with merchandising than so be it.
Numbers will always be king for me, I've inherited old Footscray jumpers with #7 on the back that have lived through Huppatz, Hawkins, West and Higgins, the #16 and #9 I wear have a modern prestige with the Bulldogs and of course there's the legendary 3, 6 and so on.
But I don't mind the names. Gives a little bit of history to the jumpers long after the players have moved on, I suppose. First off the rank will be a Mitch Honeychurch jumper, for me.

It makes the jumpers look crappy, it's not for any purpose except for selling jumpers, it's just trying to change things to be like every other sport.
There's a certain pleasure about having unique things in a sport, knowing players names by numbers, both on yours and oppositions teams is one of those things, the players belong to the numbers and become associated with it for generations afterwards.

i think the problem with the jumpers with the names on them at the moment is that it's just one more thing that's on a jumper that's already far too cluttered.
if they do push through with the names on jumpers, it should probably follow that the back-of-jumper sponsor logo goes.

Commentators complaining tonight that the names are too small.
thank god channel 7 have stuck with standard definition, I could almost read one or two names tonight. Works nicely with yet more goal reviews that are "too hard to tell", yes guys 'cause the ball and the names are all a blur.
Because you don't see anyone wearing nba jerseys on the streets.

You do realise that there are long sleave guernseys and players can choose to wear them in games if they wish
And how do you increase the font AND fit "Roberts-Thompson" on a jumper?
Names on the back of jumpers is big in other sports, but i'm just not sure how well it works for AFL. Apart from the extreme closeups, where no play was actually happening, you couldn't even read the names. The ground is too big, and the camera angles simply too far away for it to really make a difference.
About the only thing i can see it doing is forcing people to replace their jumper when numbers change, or the player leaves. As it is at the moment, Tim O'Brien is the most popular player at Hawthorn, but most 23 jumpers at hawthorn would need to be replaced if they had names.

So people have no problem and don't complain about sponsors putting logos on the front and back of the guernsey, the manufacturer putting their name on the neck, clubs putting pointless initials and/or dates on the back...
But having the most natural thing in sport, a players name and number on the back of their top, is a terrible idea and ruins the guernsey?
