Teams Las Vegas Raiders - The Black Hole

JDR does a good press conference. Unified seems to be the word of the day. Seems confident he can get us back into winning.

Interesting that even tho everyone seemed to know he already had the job there was still a 4 hour interview. Maybe he was explaining a few things such as how he can attract some players during free agency. Might be a diplomatic way of telling Reggie to stay out of it and concentrate on the draft where Reggie has done very well.

JDR brings his own cheerleaders. Nice daughters.

It actually was a 7 hour second interview with the Raiders brass. There were close to around 6-7 guys in that room during that interview, so you're going to have a lot of questions come up. Generally in these interviews, you are trying to get a history and perspective of what the prospective coach has been through, how they've learned from it, and how they would go about their daily business with your team (should you hire them). Involved in that comes analysing film, personnel, potential staff etc. A lot goes into these meetings. And then of course, basic outlines of a contract are discussed. That it took so long doesn't really surprise me.

Reggie will still be involved in the free agency process, that's not going to change. Del Rio is the head coach, he's not going to become a pseudo-GM like Hue Jackson was in 2011 after Mr. Davis' passing.

Big congrats to Marc Badain on his promotion to President of the Raiders. Great guy, very bright guy, he will do a great job in that position.

Raiders close to a one-year extension to Coliseum lease

The NFL has already said no one’s going to Los Angeles in 2015.

But at least the Raiders know they’re staying in Oakland for the time being.

According to the Associated Press, the Raiders are close to signing a one-year extension to stay at the Coliseum for 2015.

Owner Mark Davis said the agreement has been reached, and just needs to go through the paperwork phase with city, county and league officials.

What the Raiders want is a new building, somewhere. Frankly, their stadium is among the league’s worst, which has led to flirtations with San Antonio and an eye on L.A.

“We want to be here,” Davis said. “We’re not using any other place, city or whatever, as leverage. It’s not that way. It’s known that no matter what we do here, it will not be as valuable or economically as great for the Raiders as if we went somewhere else. That’s known. But we still want to be here.”

Davis also said he’d be willing to spend $500 million on a new stadium — or about half of what one would cost.

This extension is far from a long-term fix, but it kicks the can down the road a year, until another round of tax money chicken begins in earnest.

Close? No, it's as good as done. Just a matter of politically being signed off etc. Will be announced very soon. That being said, this is just another one year band-aid in hope they can get a stadium deal signed within the next 12 months. If that doesn't happen though...

Whose our OC gonna be? Anything simmering? What about DC? ST? And other position coaches?

Mike Tice will be the O-Line coach very soon. Awesome get, one of the best in the league. The #1 candidate for OC is Marc Trestman, he's the guy who Del Rio really wants. Mike Smith doesn't have an agent so it's hard to gauge if there is real interest between the Raiders and Smith for DC. The Senior Bowl is next week and this is an event where all of the new head coaches in the NFL will assemble their staffs.

With Tice coming along, does that mean we are a chance of keeping Wisniewski?

Don't count on it. I would like to keep Wis because this team has enough holes already, without creating additional ones by letting guys go via free agency. Not every player is going to be a star. If Wis wants elite money, he can leave, but for around 5 million a year, I'd sign him, especially given the cap space this team has.

One of the Thomas boys from Denver would be handy...in particular Demaryius.

Expect Demaryius to be franchised at the very least. More realistic options for Oakland are Randall Cobb and Jeremy Maclin.

Familiarity is one reason why Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio hired Bill Musgrave as the team's offensive coordinator, writes Bill Williamson. Story
Musgrave joins new head coach Jack Del Rio's staff after spending the 2014 season as the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterbacks coach.
Musgrave has previous ties to the Raiders organization having begun his coaching career there as quarterbacks coach in 1997. He also has previously served as Del Rio's offensive coordinator in Jacksonville from 2003-04.
The 47-year-old Musgrave will inherit an offense featuring second-year quarterback Derek Carr that finished last in the league in total yards, yards per game and rushing yards per game during a 3-13 season.
Musgrave last was an offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings from 2011-13.
In addition to Musgrave, former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman was identified as a candidate to take over Oakland's offense.

Underwhelming hire.

agreed - his highlight at the Vikings was actually getting some production out of Percy ("I aint running no route tree") Harvin, but overall he single handedly turned the Vikings offence into one of the worst in the league. You could argue that he was doomed with Christian Ponder, Donovan McNabb, Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman at QB over his time at the Vikings, but he did have Adrian Peterson to fall back on.

Time will only tell if he's a good hire for the Raiders and he is known as an offensive innovator, but I'd hope you've got a good QB coach to tutor Carr.

Reading a few opinions on him seems to point to him being a bit of a run, run, pass OC. Guess you could do that with AP in his prime, but jeez, we already have had years of different OCs with that gameplan. We don't need another one.

Raiders hired Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator.

Musgrave, 47, was the Eagles' QBs coach this past season and oversaw Nick Foles' multiple steps back from his breakout 2013 under then-QBs coach-turned-Dolphins OC Bill Lazor. Prior to his time with the Eagles, Musgrave was the Vikings' offensive play-caller under coach Leslie Frazier. Musgrave failed miserably at using Percy Harvin and simply leaned on Adrian Peterson. It's not a promising hire for the Raiders in our opinion, but could be good news for Latavius Murray. Musgrave will have full control of the offense under defensive-minded coach Jack Del Rio. Musgrave worked under Del Rio in Jacksonville.
